PULLMAN, Wash. - After winning a close match against Oregon Friday, the WSU women's tennis team defeated the University of Portland 8-1 Saturday in a dual hosted by the Cougars at the Stadium Way Tennis Center.

The Cougars dominated the match by winning five of six singles matches, and sweeping doubles.

"Today was great," WSU assistant coach Jackie Booth said. "It's a good confidence builder to go out and relax and put the things that we've been doing in practice together."

Junior Tamara Filipovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia), now 20-7 overall, celebrated her birthday with a win over Portland's Yenny Njoo 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 singles position. Filipovic has won nine of her last ten singles matches She also teamed up with team-captain Melissa Pine (Newfoundland, Canada) to capture an 8-1 victory over Portland's Courtney Perkins and Jana Jusapovic at the No. 1 doubles position.

After suffering a loss to Oregon Friday, senior Patrycja Gadjzik (Szczecin, Poland) and junior transfer Ana Marie Moura (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) teamed up to defeat Samantha Kluger and Yenny Njoo 8-0 at the No. 2 doubles position.

"We weren't as aggressive yesterday," Moura said. "We kinda let them control the match."

"We definitely redeemed ourselves today," Gadjzik said. "We went out really confident, got on top of them early, played really aggressive and started dictating our game. We never let them into the match. We pretty much dominated from the first ball to the last."

WSU returns to action Friday April 7 as they take on No. 20 Arizona in Tucson at 1:30 p.m.
