SEATTLE (AP and staff sources) - Deon Luton scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half,
seven in the final 6:37, and Washington avoided setting a record for
most consecutive home losses with a 64-60 Pac-10 victory over Washington State
on Saturday.
Thalo Green put the Huskies (10-18, 5-11) in the lead for good with a
fast-break layup with 3:58 left at 55-54. Luton followed with consecutive
layups in the next minute.
Washington snapped a seven-game home losing streak. The Huskies also lost
seven in a row at home during the 1939-40 and 1953-54 seasons.
The Cougars (1-15, 6-20), who earned their first conference win last
Saturday at California, went cold down the stretch and had several turnovers in
the final two minutes.
Luton's 15 points moved him into ninth place on the Huskies' all-time
scoring list with 1,463 points, passing Detlef Schrempf.
Chris Walcott, Will Perkins, Senque Carey and Greg Clark each scored nine
points for Washington. Bryan Brown scored five and was 3-for-4 from the
free-throw line in the final 41.5 seconds.
Walcott led the Huskies with nine rebounds as Washington outrebounded a
Pac-10 opponent for only the second time this season (32-29).
Chris Crosby, one of two Cougars seniors, led Washington State with 18
points. He had seven points in the second half on 2-for-7 shooting. Mike Bush
added 14 points for Washington State.
Crosby's total pushed him past Carlos Daniel, who scored 1,285 points from 1995-98, into ninth place on the
Cougars' all-time scoring list.
Additional Notes and Quotes from WSU's 63-38 loss versus Stanford
WSU Head Coach Paul Graham
"I thought our defense was good, but we just got tired. In the second
half, we didn't get to as many loose balls and we didn't rebound as well.
When you get fatigued and you have foul trouble, you're not as aggressive
as you want to be."
"We made some mistakes, but when you at minutes played, we had five guys
over 30 minutes and Washington only had two. We got tired and didn't make
the hustle plays late in the game and that was the difference."
General Notes:
Crosby needs just four points to become the ninth Cougar to reach 1,300 career
points...the Littleton, Colo., native is 21 points behind eighth-place Joe
Wallace (1,317 points/1984-87).
The Cougars shot 45.5 percent from the floor (25-of-55) which was their
best effort since hitting 46.4 percent in a Jan. 22 overtime loss to Oregon
a span of 11 games.
JR F Tyrone Evans scored eight points, which was his best game since
netting his career-high of 13 Dec. 30 at Colorado State...RS-JR G Cedric
Clark also played well with six points in a perfect three-for-three
shooting effort from the floor...it was Clark's second-best scoring effort of
his career behind the seven points he had Jan. 29 at Stanford.
The loss gave WSU just it's eighth 20-loss season in 99 years of basketball.
WSU finishes the season next weekend with games at UCLA on Thusday and USC
on Saturday.
