Cougars Split Singles Matches In 5-3 Loss To Princeton

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- - Princeton broke a 3-3 tie by winning the first two doubles matches in handing the Washington State Cougars a 5-3 setback here Wednesday in a non-conference tennis match on the San Diego State University campus.

Melissa Pine, Ana Marie Moura and Tamara Filipovic each captured singles matches as the two teams battled to a 3-3 tie going into the doubles competition. Princeton then took command 5-3 with back-to-back wins and the final doubles match-up was cancelled.

"Our play was disappointing, especially the doubles," Cougar coach Cari Groce commented. "We have struggled the last two days and struggled unnecessarily. We haven't wanted it bad enough the last couple of days."

Filipovic, now 18-7 overall, picked up here seventh win in her last eight matches by defeating Princeton's Julia Salzman 6-2, 6-3. Moura also is on a hot streak, improving to 19-9 overall with her fifth win in her last six matches. She downed Priya Bhupathi 6-3, 6-1.

WSU returns home for its next competition to face Oregon, Friday March 31 at noon.
