March 11, 2000

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 32nd-ranked Washington State women's tennis team fell to 41st-ranked University of San Diego, 5-4 Saturday at the USD Invitational.

The Cougars (7-5) fell behind 4-2 after singles play and was unable to rally for the victory despite capturing two of the three doubles matches.

"We have to find a way to win more singles matches," WSU head coach Cari Groce said. "We dig ourselves a deep hole when you fall behind 4-2 after singles. It is tough to sweep three doubles matches."

Ana Moura defeated Paola Arrangoiz 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and Moniek van de Ven downed Stacie Lee in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) at No. 6 singles.

"I am a little disappointed we lost a close match, but I thought Ana and Moniek played extemely hard," Groce said.

Melissa Pine combined with Moura to post a hard fought 9-7 victory over Arrangoiz and Krista Manning at No. 2 doubles while Tamara Filipovic and Kathleen Pienaar recorded an 8-5 win over Heather Polumbus and Lee at No. 3 doubles.

WSU plays at 9 a.m. Sunday against Yale.
