SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Washington State women's tennis team improved to 7-4 with a 5-1 victory over Richmond in the San Diego Invitational, Friday.
Patrycja Gajdzik, Melissa Pine, Ana Maria Moura, Tamara Filipovic and Moneik van de Ven all posted singles victories for the Cougars. The singles wins clinched the match and doubles play was not completed.
Gajdzik dropped the first set to the Spiders' Elizabeth Cascarilla, but rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 1 position.
"I was pleased with the way Patrycja competed and battled back," WSU head coach Cari Groce said. "She lost the first set, but battled back and stuck it out for the win."
Pine defeated Janelle Williams, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 and Moura knocked off Vanessa Bagnato 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3.
"Ana did not play her best tennis today, but fought through the match," Groce said. "Melissa played very well again today and earned a victory."
Groce added, "Richmond is a very good team. We didn't know what to expect from them as far as strength. That makes a team very tough to play when it is always coming after you."
The Cougars take on the host University of San Diego Toreros Saturday at 1 p.m.
