BOISE, Idaho - The WSU women's tennis team defeated the University of Utah 7-2 in a dual match hosted by Boise State at the Boise State University Boas Tennis Center Friday.
WSU won four of six singles matches, and swept the doubles matches.
"This was really a confidence boost for us, because the girls were thinking `Can they do it?'," WSU coach Cari Groce said. "They proved it to themselves that we can win with our lineup."
WSU is still experimenting with their doubles line up due to injury. The changes to the lineup paid off as WSU went undefeated in doubles play. Patrycia Gajdzik (Szczecin, Poland) and Melissa Pine (Newfoundland, Canada) defeated Megan Dorny and Cassie Kasteler 8-6 at the No. 1 postion, improving their record to 8-4 overall. Sarah Burrows (Lakewood, Colo.) and Tamara Filipovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) defeated Irini Kotoglou and Frida Kareld 8-3 at the No. 2 position, and Ana Maria Moura (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) and Kathleen Pienaar (Belliville, South Africa) defeated Linn Ronnberg and Wilkinson 8-5 at the No. 3 postion.
"The Patrycia and Melissa combination impressed me last week and we decided to keep it the same," Groce said. "It was the first time for Tamara and Sarah to play."
The win for WSU improves their record to 3-2 overall, and they will take on the host Broncos Saturday at 10 a.m.
"We stuck to our game plan and executed," Groce said. "That will be prevalent when we compete (Saturday) against Boise State."
