PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Philip Dejworek and Carmie Olowoyo each scored 18 points to lead Portland to a sloppy 70-66 nonconference victory over Washington State Tuesday.

The Pilots (3-3) trailed only once in the game, at 3-2, but never got far enough in front to feel comfortable. They did enjoy a 40-27 lead 2:30 into the second half, but the Cougars scored 13 straight points to tie the game.

J Locklier had 18 points and eight rebounds to lead Washington State (2-2), which managed one more tie when Cedric Clark hit a 3-pointer to make it 45-45 with 11:52 left.

Olowoyo matched that 3-pointer with one of his own to give the Pilots the lead for good. He finished with four 3-pointers.

Despite committing nine second-half turnovers, and 16 in the first half, Washington State managed to stay close down the stretch with a full-court press that led to some reckless play by the Pilots.

The last of Portland's 14 turnovers led to a layup by Marcus Moore that cut the Pilots' lead to 66-63 with 28 seconds left.

The Pilots held on, though, as Olowoyo and Tim Frost each hit a pair of free throws in the final 13 seconds. Frost finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and a blocked shot in the final seconds.

It was Portland's first victory over Washington State since the 1989-90 season and the Pilots first victory over a Pac-10 team since a 61-50 win over Oregon State in 1996.
