LEWISTON, Idaho - The WSU women's tennis team hosted No. 1 Stanford as the Cardinal defeated the Cougars 9-0 at the Lewiston Tennis Center Saturday.
Stanford's top-ranked crew included sophomore Marissa Irvin, the highest ranked amateur in the world at No. 130. Irvin defeated senior Patrycja Gajdzik (Szczecin, Poland) at the No. 1 position 6-1, 6-1. Six players on the Cardinal eight-member roster rank in the top 100 nationally in singles competition.
The closest match for the 34th-ranked Cougars came from junior-transfer Ana Maria Moura. The Rio de Janiero, Brazil native, closed-in on 75th-ranked Teryn Ashley in the first set, but would end the day 5-6, 2-6. WSU continues to adjust to its new lineup in singles and doubles due to injuries to junior Erica Perkins (Seattle) and sophomore Sarah Burrows (Lakewood, Colo.).
"It's been tough, but I think they have done a great job in adjusting," WSU coach Cari Groce said. "You have to give them all good credit. They are fighting hard, stepping up and working their butts off. It's the beginning of the season and we have a long season ahead of us. I think we are doing well."
Stanford goes to 4-0 on the season, while WSU goes to 2-2. The Cougars will travel next to Boise, Idaho to dual Utah and Boise State Feb. 4 and 5.
"We are excited to play Boise State and Utah and be able to play our game," Groce said. "It's very tough when you are playing the No. 1 and No. 3 teams in the nation. A lot of teams, no matter what sport it is, have the opportunity to play a team that's ranked in the top 5 or 10 only once our twice a year - not once our twice a week."
