Mentor Description
- TITLE:Â Volunteer Mentor for Student-Athletes
- FUNCTION:Â Assist student-athlete in acquiring the skills to become effective in his/her personal development and professional career goals. Mentors are good listeners, people who care, people who want to help young people bring out strengths that are already there. A mentoring relationship can take many forms. In the best relationships, the adult helps the student-athlete define and achieve his/her goals.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide a minimum number of hours of contact with mentee and follow through on commitments.
- Assist in the development of skills necessary for minority students to succeed in college.
- Show interest and support the mentee's academic and social endeavors.
- Complete necessary forms and reports to help assess and evaluate the mentee.
- Assist the mentee in developing realistic career/academic goals and expectations.
- Provide leadership to enhance minority students' adaptation and integration to the campus environment.
- Attend regular informational meetings and functions that benefit the mentee.
- Serve as an available resource for the mentee.
- Encourage personal growth and academic achievement by helping the mentee set realistic goals.
- Share insights, ideas and opinions with the mentee, providing sound advice on business and career-related concerns.
- Help resolve any conflicts that may arise. Communicate with mentee in an open and honest manner.
- Hold mentee to a high standard of academic output.
- Be an advocate for the mentee as progress is made toward completion of the undergraduate degree
- Introduce the mentee to opportunities for personal and professional growth.
- Provide a balance of both positive and negative feedback.
- Share the wisdom of your past mistakes.
- Direct a mentee to other resources when needed.
- Establish a trusting and open relationship.
- Be positive in the support of Athletic staff and Coaches.
Stay in contact with Mentor Coordinator concerning negative behavior of any sort.
