Lacy and Hawkinson Pick up All-Pac-12 Honors

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Washington State University men’s basketball senior guard DaVonté Lacy has been named All-Pac-12 First Team, while sophomore forward Josh Hawkinson has been named the Pac-12 Most Improved Player of the Year and All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention, commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.
A native of Tacoma, Wash., Lacy finished the regular season as the school’s all-time career 3-point leader with 249 after passing Klay Thompson who had 242 in his three-year career (2009-11). Lacy is also the school’s fifth all-time leading scorer with 1,539 points and needs just 24 more points to move into fourth on the list. The 6-foot-4 guard is averaging 17.2 points this season, ranking fourth in the Pac-12, while ranking second for free throws made (140), fourth for 3-pointers made per game (3.3) and 10th for free throw percentage (.773, 140-181).
A native of Shoreline, Wash., Hawkinson statistically is the second-most improved scorer in the nation with a 13.5 points per game improvement from last year and the most improved rebounder with a 9.2 rebounds per game improvement. This year he’s averaging 14.7 ppg and 10.8 rpg game after averaging just 1.2 ppg and 1.6 rpg as a freshman. He’s played 804 more minutes this year than last season and set the school record with 19 double-doubles, passing Jim McKean’s single-season mark of 17 set in 1967. At the end of the regular season, Hawkinson had tied Ted Werner for the single-season rebounding record, a mark Werner set in 1964 with 323. Hawkinson leads the league in rebounds per game, defensive rebounds per game and double-doubles and ranks nationally in those categories at 10th, third and fifth, respectively. The 6-foot-10 forward ranks 11th in the league in scoring and third for free throw percentage (.848, 112-for-132).
Lacy becomes the 19th Cougar to earn first-team all-conference honors since the Pacific-8 Conference began in 1968-68 and his honor is the 23rd by a Cougar. He’s the first WSU student-athlete to pick up the first team honor since Brock Motum was named first team in 2012. Last season Lacy earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention accolades.
Hawkinson becomes the second Cougar to be named Pac-12 Most Improved Player after Motum earned the award in 2012. He’s the 21st Cougar to earn all-conference honorable mention as it marks the 23rd time a WSU student-athlete has earned the accolades. Lacy also earned Pac-12 All-Freshman Honorable Mention in 2012.
The Cougars continue their season as they enter the 2015 Pac-12 Tournament as the No. 9 seed and take on No. 8 California, Wednesday, March 11 at 12:10 p.m. at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
