Moderator: Good afternoon and welcome Washington State Cougar basketball fans to this afternoon's online chat with assistant coach Matt Woodley. The Cougars are just a few days away from their East Regional semifinal match-up against No. 1 North Carolina this Thursday. Coach Woodley, thanks for taking time out of your schedule to join us today. |
Matt Woodley: Good to be here once again. Thanks for having me. |
Moderator: Okay, our time is limited so let's get to some questions. |
Larry Cato, Davenport , IA: Please explain the process that occurs when all of the coaches talk for the length of nearly every timeout. What can you talk about for that long? |
Matt Woodley: First, we meet as a staff outside the huddle to talk about what is going on in the game. It helps Coach Bennett gather his thoughts so he goes into the huddle with one or two strategic points to impart to the team. By the way, East Pony League hasn't been the same in 15 years! |
Spokane: coach W.......did the WSU team come back to Pullman or does the team go to NC from Colorado? thanks , Mike |
Matt Woodley: We returned to Pullman very early Sunday morning (1 a.m.) and we leave for Charlotte tomorrow. |
Todd (Sioux City, IA.): Did you know that there is at least one "old coach" pulling for Wash. State??? Congrats and best of luck!!! |
Matt Woodley: I knew you would be pulling for Washington State! Best of luck to you and thanks again Coach for giving me my start. |
Roger (Pullman): Who's the coolest coach outside the basketball offices? |
Matt Woodley: By far and away the coolest coach outside the basketball offices is Ron Sanchez. He's the most fun to be around and never has a bad day. |
Karl (Seattle): Coach, congrats on reaching the Sweet 16! Can you explain how significant reaching this far in the tournament is to the program? |
Matt Woodley: I think it's great that we have reached the Sweet 16. It's speaks volumes of the kids we have in our program who bought into a vision that someday we can reach this point. All of their hard work has paid off and we are able to give the Cougar fans a reason to celebrate in March. |
Dean Ulich- Westphalia, IA: Other than Tony who has done the best coaching job over the last two seasons? |
Matt Woodley: Other than Tony, I think Bob McKillop at Davidson has done the best job the past two seasons in college basketball. |
Bill (Spokane): Coach, how did the experience from the 2007 tournament benefit the team during the first rounds of the 2008 tournament? |
Matt Woodley: There's no question that last year's experience helped us this past weekend. We talked a lot about the fact that we had unfinished business in this year's tournament because of the way we played against Vanderbilt last year. It was motivation for our players to do "more" so we could advance further in this tournament. |
Matthew (Spokane): How would you rate the class of recruits for next year? |
Matt Woodley: I think that this is the best class that we have signed since the first class five years ago, which included Robbie, Derrick and Kyle. Each one of these kids addresses a need that we have in this program. |
Brian (Lake Isabella, Ca): We here of upgrades bing made in the basketball department. What is the next thing that is needed? |
Matt Woodley: Constant upgrades to our facilities are critical to the contined success of our program. Please read Jim Sterk's latest A.D. Forum about future planned upgrades. |
Moderator: Okay, Matt, that's all the time we have. Thank you once again for joining us. |
Matt Woodley: It was great to see all the Coug fans in Denver; hopefully, you'll be able to make it to Charlotte this weekend because you guys made a huge difference in the outcomes of both games. |
