Armstrong, Welch Named Pac-10 Conference Medal Winners
June 23, 2005
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- - Washington State University's Calvin Armstrong and Kim Welch are among the 2004-05 Pacific-10 Conference Medal winners announced Thursday by Commissioner Tom Hansen.
A Conference Medal is awarded annually to each member institution's outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.
Welch rewrote the Cougar women's golf record book during her four-year career at WSU. Selected as an All-American twice and the All-Pac-10 team four times, Welch completed her tenure at WSU with 11 career wins, 31 career top 10 finishes and 40 career top 25 finishes, all school records. In addition, Welch finished in the top 10 in over 60 percent of events played.
In a career full of highlights, Welch completed the 2003 NCAA Championships in fifth place, just two shots out of first. Welch held the lead at one point in second round and despite a lost ball on hole No. 16, finished the second round in sole possession of second.
As a left tackle on the Cougar football team, Armstrong anchored a Cougar offensive line that did not allow a sack against Idaho and Oregon, just one against Arizona and UCLA and just two against Stanford during the 2004 season.
Armstrong was named to the All-Pac-10 team three times in his career, including two first team selections in 2002 and 2004. A starter in 44 of 48 games played during his collegiate career, Armstrong was selected by Philadelphia Eagles in the sixth round (211th overall pick) of the 2005 NFL Draft.
The Conference Medal winners will be honored at the State Farm Pride of the Pac-10 Luncheon held in Los Angeles in conjunction with the Pac-10 Men's Basketball Tournament next March.
