BELMONT, Calif. -- The Washington State women's rowing team had morning
success and afternoon disappointment at the Stanford Invitational at
Redwood Shores Saturday.
The Cougars swept three morning races, including a 7.6 second victory over
the host Cardinal in the varsity eight. Sixteenth-ranked WSU finished in a
time of 6:50.27. WSU's 2nd Varsity eight finished with a time of 6:59.80
and bested Stanford by 22.7 seconds. The Cougar novice eight completed the
sweep with a time of 7:10, finishing ahead of both the Cardinal (7:35) and
USC (7:43).
"We just tried to row powerful in the morning with the varsity eight and
second varsity eight," WSU head coach Tammy Crawford said. "We did not
spring so that we could conserve a little for the afternoon."
The afternoon session began well for the Cougars, as WSU's varsity four defeated USC by 40.27 seconds with a time of 7:22.43.
However, the second varsity eight and varsity eight came up short in their
races. The second varsity eight finished in 6:45, four seconds behind USC.
In the varsity eight race, WSU was 4.4 seconds behind ninth-ranked USC,
which finished with a time of 6:44.03.
The Stanford Invitational continues Sunday with WSU racing Kansas in the
morning session before going up against San Diego State in the afternoon
session.
