MOSCOW, Idaho. -- One day after running an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 800m, Alishia Booterbaugh won the women's mile in a lifetime best time of 5:02.02 at the McDonald's II Open Indoor at Moscow, Idaho.
Greta Johnson ran just behind Booterbaugh to finish third in 5:07.50. Booterbaugh's previous best in the mile was 5:09.76, set at the McDonald's I Open (Feb 5). Friday, Booterbaugh ran the 800m in a lifetime best and NCAA AQ time of 2:07.04 to win the event at Vandal Invitational.
Andrea Thornton and Becky Potter finished first and second, respectively, in the 20-pound weight throw. Thornton, who finished second in the discus, topped out at 60-2, while Potter's best was recorded at 56-10 3/4.
The WSU women dominated the sprint events, taking victories in the 55m hurdles, 60m dash, 200m and 400m.
Sharika Higgins established a new indoor best by winning the 400m in 56.28. Heidi Abersfeller finished second in the event in 58.26. Abersfeller also produced a third-place finish in the 200m in 25.79.
Eric Dudley smashed his personal best winning the 800m. Last year Dudley ran 2:03.61, but Saturday he was nearly ten seconds better with a victorious time of 1:54.44.
The men's long jump saw Chad Schwediman turn in his best performance of the season. The junior and Pullman native jumped 22-3 1/2 to edge Idaho's Rick McCrery, who finished third in 22-1 3/4.
Some of the McDonald's II Open action took place Friday night in cooperation with the Vandal Invitational. Among the notables, Ian Waltz took second-place in the discus with an effort of 187-9 1/2.. Washington's Ben Lindsey captured first with a throw of 189-8.
Cicely Clinkenbeard won the triple jump easily with an NCAA provisional qualifying effort of 41-11 1/2. Saturday, Clinkenbeard finished second in the long jump with a best of 18-1.
The next WSU indoor track and field action is slated for February 25-26 at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Reno, Nevada.
