Cougars Claim Seven Of 11 Events At Olympic Venue
October 16, 1998
ATLANTA, Ga. — The Washington State women's swim team captured seven of 11 events at the Georgia Tech Aquatics Center - site of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games.
Junior Gretchen Chambers (Adelaide, Australia) won the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 10 minutes, 34.02 seconds. Senior Jessica Chisholm (Concord, Calif.) finished first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.89, while senior Anna Hohmann (Victoria, Australia) claimed the 200 backstroke with a 2:07.34.
Despite the seven wins, the Cougars were narrowly defeated by the University of Louisville 119-118. The one point loss is the smallest margin of defeat for the program. In 1988, Oregon State defeated WSU by four points. However, WSU came back and claimed a victory over Georgia Southern 130.50-106.50. Both schools were first-time opponents.
Another first-time meeting against Alabama and NE Louisiana is on schedule tomorrow for the Cougars at Tuscaloosa, Ala. The dual meet will begin at 9:00 a.m. (PST).
