Holt Leads ASU Past Cougars 80-66
February 4, 1999
TEMPE, Ariz. - Rachel Holt led host Arizona State's inside game with 19
points as the Sun Devils beat Washington State 80-66 in a women's
Pacific-10 Conference basketball game at Wells Fargo Arena Thursday night.
Holt had offensive help from Theresa Jantzen, who scored 16, and Kristine
Sand, who added 14 for the Sun Devils (9-10 overall and 3-7 in league
play). Holt also had a game-high nine rebounds as ASU whipped the Cougars
38-26 on the boards.
Jennifer Kerns led WSU with 19 points, while Tricia Lamb added 18 for WSU
(9-10, 3-7). Yvonne Volkman led the Cougars with eight rebounds, but was
held to just four points. The loss was WSU's fourth straight to ASU over
the past two years.
The Sun Devils won the game early in the second half, then held off a
late-game charge by the Cougars that cut an 18-point deficit to seven
before free throws in the last three minutes produced the final 14-point
margin.
In a 10 minute span, WSU outscored the Sun Devils by 11 points, 32-21, to
pull within seven 68-61 with four minutes to play, but then a couple of
shots didn't fall and WSU resorted to fouling the hosts to keep pace. ASU
responded by hitting seven charity tosses in the last two minutes. WSU's
only answer was a three-point play by Kerns.
ASU opened up the second half with a nine-point advantage they quickly
doubled in six minutes. On the strength of a 13-4 run, the host club opened
up a 47-29 lead. Six players scored in the run.
WSU then turned up its defensive intensity and began to click on offense,
outscoring ASU 32-21. Lamb knocked down two of her three treys and scored
11 points in the run, while Kerns added seven and Nyseth six.
"ASU just pounded the ball inside and even in our zone, we couldn't shut
them down," said WSU head coach Harold Rhodes. His reference was to the top
three ASU scorers, all front-line players who tallied 49 of their team's 80
points, grabbed 16 rebounds and hit 19 of 26 field goal attempts.
"With the exception of about 10 minutes, we did not play well," added
Rhodes. "Right now we can't seem to find more than two players who step up
offensively and in this league you need at least three players who are
scoring."
The Sun Devils came up with a big 12-0 run in the first half to open up an
11 point advantage 16-5 six minutes into the contest. Eventually ASU went
on by 15 points 30-15 with six minutes to play in the first half. Jantzen
led the first charge with half of her team's 12 points, while Holt had a
pair of inside buckets in a six point home team run that produced the
largest advantage of the first half. Holt's 12 points paced ASU in the
first half.
WSU struggled on offense and handling the ball in the first half. An
uncharacteristic 13 turnovers was compounded by shooting under 35 percent
in the first 20 minutes. Kerns, who downed four of six field goal attempts
in the opening half, provided the only consistent Cougar offense. WSU even
struggled at the free throw line, making just 5-of-9 charity tosses. For
the game, WSU made just 15 of 25 (62.5%), well below their league-leading
73.3 percent.
Lamb's first trey of the game gave the Cougars a brief 5-4 lead, but ASU
came back with a 12-point run that was finally halted by a three-pointer
from Kerns. Later in the half Kerns hit a layin that cut ASU's once
11-point lead to seven, 20-13, but that was as close as WSU could get for
the rest of the first half. A pair of Volkman free throws and a short
jumper by Kerns closed out the first half scoring and cut ASU's lead to
nine points.
Saturday WSU moves to Tucson, where they complete the road trip with a 6:00
p.m. game at Arizona.
