#4 Florida Sweeps Washington State Volleyball

November 28, 1998

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Florida Gators claimed the SEC-Pac-10 Challenge Tournament title with a 15-2, 15-11, 15-6, win over the Washington State volleyball team Saturday afternoon at the at the Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World.

WSU ends the 1998 season at 12-14 overall while Florida, winner of the SEC title, heads into the NCAA Championship Tournament at 31-2. WSU is not eligible for the NCAA Championship Tournament field for the first time since 1990, the last time Cougar coach Cindy Fredrick finished the season with a losing record.

Florida's Jenny Manz led all players with 19 kills, hitting .469, and had 10 digs and five blocks as the Gators dominated Washington State. Heather Wright tallied 12 kills, hitting .444, and had five blocks. UF's Jenni Keene chipped in 10 kills and the match-leading 12 digs.

WSU's Rouse was the only Cougar in double-figures with 10 kills and led the team with five blocks. WSU hit a mere .055 while the Gators hit .319.

In earlier tournament action Saturday, Washington defeated South Carolina 15-5, 15-13, 15-7.

Cougars Rouse and Colleen Smith were named to the six-player all-tournament team, joining Florida's Wright and Washington's Kristina Laffling and Leslie Tuiasosopo. Manz was named the tournament MVP.

This match marked the final competition for five Cougar seniors: Wendy Rouse (Reno, Nev.), Samantha Spink (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho), Lucie Vratnickova (Brno, Czech Republic), Kim Kleven (Spokane, Wash.), and the injured Jennifer Stinson (Davenport, Wash.) who should join the Cougar basketball team sometime in December.
