COUG LINE GETS BIGGER: WSU's starting offensive line is the biggest in school history, although it will be a little lighter this week without Mike Sage...the starters against Illinois weighed a collective 1,538 pounds, an average of 307.6 pounds...Sage (absent this week) is the largest at 323 poundsRyan Tujague, at 294, is the only regular under 300...WSU never before has started an offensive line averaging over 300 pounds...with Joe Criscione at 293 replacing Sage, the Cougs will average 301.8 pounds against Idahohere's the regular Coug starters:

TRAVELING A NEW EXPERIENCE: For nearly half of WSU's 60-player travel squad last week at Boise State, making a road trip was a new experience28 of the players on the WSU travel roster were making their first trip, not counting last year's Rose Bowl (when every player made the trip)in addition, 22 players are in their first year of competition for the Cougars.
GILMORE BUSTS 79 YARDS: Junior DeJuan Gilmore had his finest day as a Cougar running back last week at Boise Statehis 123-yard rushing performance included a key 79-yard TD run late in the game when WSU was struggling on offenseit was WSU's first TD run of longer than 75 yards since 1995 when Frank Madu went 87 yards at Nebraska.
MORONKOLA GETS LONG RETURN: Senior cornerback Dee Moronkola nearly broke a long kickoff return against Illinois (42 yards) in WSU's season openerat Boise State last week he finally got the long one, a critical 88-yard return that instantly answered a Bronco scoreit was the first KO return by a Cougar 50 yards or longer since Bryant Thomas went 50 yards with an on-side kick in 1996the 88 yard return equals the 14th longest in WSU history (tying Jerry Williams' 88-yard return against Montana in 1948).
QB SUCCESSION: In 1978 when Jack Thompson was a senior, the young freshman sitting in the wings was Clete Casper, who quarterbacked WSU to the 1981 Holiday Bowl...waiting to replace Mark Rypien in 1985 was Timm Rosenbach, who guided WSU to the 1988 Aloha Bowl...waiting then was sophomore Brad Gossen...when Drew Bledsoe left in 1992 Mike Pattinson was waiting his turn...and after Chad Davis quarterbacked WSU to the Alamo Bowl, there was Ryan Leaf.
PRICE'S COUGS START FAST: Washington State, since Mike Price took over in 1989, has won eight of 10 home openers, including each of the last seven...during Price's 10 years, WSU is 32-14 through the first five games of each season...his squads are 6-4 in season openers (not home openers), 8-2 in the second game of the year, 7-2 in the third game, 6-3 in the fourth game and 6-3 in the fifth game.
WSU INJURIES: Here is WSU's injury report for Monday, Sept. 14, from Mark Smaha, director of athletic medicine: CB LeJuan Gibbons (arthroscopic surgery Aug. 26; possible); LB Tupo Tuupo (broken shoulder blade Aug. 24; out until mid-Oct.), OG Mike Sage (right knee strain suffered against Illinois, will not play), LB Raonall Smith (bruised shoulder, probable), OL Ryan Raymond (right fibula fracture, questionable), RB Jason Clayton (knee bruise, probable).
ROOKIE ROSTER ADDITIONS: WSU has added two scholarship players to the roster of rookies who reported this fall...they are freshman WR Curtis Nettles (Culver City, Calif.) and junior college transfer DB Dante Minners (Bloomington, Calif., Citrus CC).
MARTIN PICKS TWO PASSES: Transfer Chris Martin, who earned a starting cornerback position the week of the opener against Illinois, came up with two interceptions against Boise State and also led the Cougars with 14 tackles, including 11 primary stops.
LINDELL EQUALS RECORD: Junior Rian Lindell booted four field goals at Boise State to tie the WSU one-game recordhis four covered 32 yards twice, 38 and 24 yardsJason Hanson (twice in 1989), Paul Watosn (1977) and Chuck Diedrick (1975) also had four in a game.
SI TABS COUGAR QUARTERBACKS: A recent issue of Sports Illustrated tabs Washington State as the best college in the nation for quarterbacks...the weekly magazine rated every position for the past 10 years and concluded, on the strength of Cougars Timm Rosenbach, Drew Bledsoe and Ryan Leaf, WSU had done the best job of turning out top-notch quarterbacks.

SCORING STREAK ALIVE AT 157: The Washington State Cougars have scored in a record 157 straight games. The current streak started with a 16-14 win over Ball State in the fourth game of the 1984 season and came on the heels of a 44-0 blanking at the hands of Ohio State. PAC-10 SCORING STREAK AT 173: In addition to having scored in 157 consecutive games, WSU also has scored in 173 straight Pac-10 Conference games, by far the longest active scoring streak in the league...the last time WSU was shut out in a Pac-10 game was Oregon State's 7-0 win in 1975 at Corvallis.
COUGS STINGY IN FIRST QUARTER: WSU's defense has allowed 213 first quarter points in the last 59 games (3.61/quarter) over the past six years...WSU allowed 41 first-quarter points in 1993, 29 in 1994, 45 in 1995, 43 in 1996, 48 first quarter points in 1997, and seven this year.

MIKE PRICE AMONG WSU'S BEST: Only one Washington State football coach with tenure of five years or longer at WSU put together a better record than Mike Price...Price, in his 10 seasons at WSU, is 55-49-0 (.529), while his career mark is now 101-93-0...Babe Hollingbery was 93-53-14 (.625) during his 1926-42 (17 years) tenure...Price's record is the best at WSU in the last 50 years for coaches with a tenure of three or more years...Price's 54 wins at WSU ranks second to Hollingbery's 93...Jim Walden is third on the victory list at 44.
NOTHING LIKE HOME: The Washington State Cougars love to play at home and after looking at the team's home and away records during Mike Price's 10-year tenure, it's easy to see why teams don't enjoy their trips to Pullman...Price at home has a 31-17 record, including a 24-8 mark the past six years...on the road, WSU is 24-32...WSU's 6-0 home record in 1997 is the best ever for the Cougars, who previously had never won six home games in one year:

WEEKLY WSU PRESS CONFERENCES: WSU hosts a weekly press conference each Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. in the Media Information Conference Room, Bohler Addition 195. All in-season head coaches and selected players (when available) will be available for the phone conference and in-person interviews. Contact the WSU Media Information Office for more information. LIVE TELEVISION: Sept. 19 the Pac-10 Conference television package includes: ABC Sports will telecast the BYU at Washington game regionally at 12:30 p.m. PT, while FOX Sports Net will show the North Carolina at Stanford game nationally at 3:30 p.m. and the Iowa at Arizona game nationally at 7:15 PT. Cable channel FX will show the UCLA at Houston game at 12:30 PT.

WSU RADIO: Bob Robertson, Paul Sorensen, Jeff Aaron, and Bud Nameck will combine talents on the 24-station Crimson and Gray Sports Network. Robertson is in his 32nd year of broadcasting Cougar sports and Sorensen is in his 13th season with WSU. Broadcast time is 60 minutes prior to kickoff. The "Mike Price Show," produced and distributed by Broadcast Ink, airs weekly throughout the network, with Robertson as the show's host.
SATELLITE: WSU uplinks football video twice each week...each Sunday at 6:15 p.m. PDT WSU uplinks a 30-minute package (C-Band, Telstar 4, Transponder 1) of highlights from the previous game and an interview with head coach Mike Price...each Tuesday a 15-minute pack (C-Band, Telestar 5, Transponder 7) is uplinked at 4:15 p.m. with coach and player interviews recorded at practice that afternoon...the service is provided by Northwest Public Television on the WSU campus (if trouble, call 509-335-5177). A test program is sent out for 15 minutes prior to each uplink time. The Pacific-10 office transmits a weekly highlight package each Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. PDT on Telstar 4, Transponder 20, C-Band (if trouble, call 310-543-1835 or the Pac-10 office).
