COUGARS ON A ROLL AFTER TAKING TWO OF THREE FROM UW, HOST CAL TO THREE-GAME SERIES: WSU head coach Steve Farrington said it best after the Cougs beat UW 14-1 May first.
"All we had to do was put April behind us, and move into May," he said referring the WSU's dismal 2-16 record in April.
Now WSU is 2-0 in April, and with two wins against cross-state rival Washington under their belt, the Cougar baseball team is set to finish the season strong with ten games remaining.
WSU will host the California Golden Bears to a three-game Pacific-10 Conference series this weekend at Bailey Field. The series will start Saturday to offset graduation weekend and final exams. Saturday's game will start at 7 p.m. with senior player introductions prior to first pitch. Sunday's game will be held at 1 p.m. and Monday's game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
Monday's game is Community Appreciation Day and all fans will be admitted into the game free of admission.
The Cougars and Golden Bears met earlier this season in a three-game series at Evans Diamond in Berkeley, with WSU taking two of three. Ray Hattenburg led the Cougs at the plate in that series going 6-for-13 with a pair of home runs.
For the season Hattenburg continues has continued his tear at the plate and is now hitting .396 on the year. Jason Grove continued his long ball display hitting his 12th home run of the year against UW. Grove is inching near the .400 mark with an overall .392 average.
Zach Bode, Bookie Gates, and Shawn Stevenson also had good weekends at the plate against the Huskies. Bode was 4-for-9 with two doubles and Gates was 7-for-14. Stevenson raised his season average from .290 to .308 with a 7-for-13 weekend.
On the mound converted starter Reggie Rivard provided biggest performance of the weekend with a six-hit, complete game victory over UW last Saturday. The hard-throwing junior started the year as the closer, but has since made the switch to the staring role where he has gone 1-0 in four starts posting a 2.78 ERA.
Jamaal Gaines pitched well in relief on two occasions and will return to the starting rotation this weekend.
Cal leads the all-time series 19-15-1.
NEW PAC-10 FORMAT: The 1999 season marks a new era in Pacific-10 Conference baseball as the disbanded the former North and South divisions to form one unified league. Portland State dropped its program following the '98 season leaving only three teams in the Northern Divison. This year nine Pac-10 schools (Oregon does not have a team) will make up the Pac-10 baseball league with each team playing a 24-game schedule, with the regular season champion earning the conference automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. WSU will play Oregon State, Cal, and UW twice, but only one of the series will count towards the league standings.

CWS AND THE PAC-10: Capturing College World Series titles is nothing new for Pacific-10 Conference teams. Conference clubs have won the national baseball title 24 times since the CWS started in 1947, including 17 times in the last 31 years. In all, Pac-10 teams have played for the title 33 times, with 10 second-place finishes. At the CWS last year, Arizona State and Southern Cal combined for 35 runs before USC came away with a 21-14 win. It was the Trojans 12th CWS title all-time. The only years at least one Pac-10 team did not qualify for the CWS were 1969-89-91-96.
FORMER COUGS OPEN WITH BANG 1999: Here is how former Cougar players faired in their first week of action in the 1999 Major League Baseball seasonMike Kinkade (1992-96) recorded his first Major League hit 4/12 with a pinch-hit, two-run double in the eighth inning and hit his first career major league home run April 29 against the San Diego Padres. In that game Olerud and Kinkade both hit home runs. Scott Hatteberg was recently put on the disabled list:

1998 - A SEASON OF RECORDS: In 1998 Casey Kelley (Ellensburg, Wash.) etched his name into the record books with a Washington State and Pac-10 North record 25 home runs. The record mark broke John Olerud's 1988 record of 23. An amazing fact is 20 of his 25 long balls sailed to left field, his opposite field. Kelley finished ranked third nationally with .51 home runs per game and was named third team All-America by Collegiate BaseballKelley also set the record for 63 strikeouts in a seasonSteve Gleason hit six triples, one off the school record of seven.
ONE TOUGH SCHEDULE: The NCAA doesn't compile a power ranking for college baseball, but if the 1999 WSU baseball schedule was put to a vote, it would be one of the toughest in the countryin all WSU will play six teams in Baseball America's top 25 and eight teams in Collegiate Baseball's top 30the Cougars were 29th in both the Collegiate Baseball and Baseball Weekly polls the week of March 22.

EARLIER IN THE SEASON AGAINST CAL: If it wasn't for an Xavier Nady home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Cougars could have walked away from Evans Diamond earlier in the year with a three-game sweep of the Golden Bears Hattenburg was the hottest Coug in that series going 6-for-13 with two runs scored and two home runsboth his home runs came in the same game March 13Steve Curran also had a good weekend against Cal going 3-for-6 with a home runZach Bode hit two home runs and Steve Gleason hit a grand slamon the mound Jamaal Gaines gave up just two runs and three hits in eight innings to pick up a win and Todd Meldahl gave up just a single tally in seven innings to pick up the other win.
