Cougars Shutout SJSU, 2-0
Parrish throws complete game, two-hitter.
February 26, 1999
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Washington State starting pitcher Wade Parrish
dominated the San Jose State baseball team with a complete game, two-hit
shutout as the Cougars inched by the Spartans 2-0 in a non-conference game
Friday at Municipal Stadium. The Cougars are now 6-2 on the season.
Parrish (Othello, Wash.) was nearly unstoppable in his third outing of the
year. The junior left-hander was chasing history with a no-hitter through
six complete innings, until giving up a hit to the Spartans' Tony Tognetti
in the seventh inning.
"The outside pitches and the change-ups were there for me today," Parrish
said. "They couldn't hit them. They were clueless. It was definitely the
best game I've thrown in my career."
Parrish retired 26 of the 32 batters he faced while striking out nine and
walking only two in his third victory of the year. He became the first
Cougar to throw a complete game shutout since Todd Belitz did on April 6,
1997, and it was Parrish's fourth career complete game as a Cougar. In his
23 innings of work thus far in 1999, Parrish has compiled a 0.78 ERA while
giving up only two earned runs and 12 base hits. He is now 12-10 in his
Cougar career.
San Jose State starter Jeremy Rogelstad (1-3) gave an outstanding effort
despite picking his third loss of the season. Rogelstad (Benecia, Calif.)
went the distance for the Spartans while giving up 10 hits and two runs.
The tall right-hander struck out 10 Cougar batters and now has 35
strikeouts in 33 innings of work.
WSU catcher Jeff Scherer (Kennewick, Wash.) was the only Cougar to have
more than one hit as he broke out of a mild slump with a 2-for-4 game
including his seventh double of the season. Scherer started the season on
a tear with a 14-for-22 series at New Mexico State then went 0-for-10 last
week against Gonzaga. The Cougars' leading hitter Jason Grove (.567, Walla
Walla, Wash.) was sidelined for the first time in '99 with an injured
shoulder.
Shawn Stevenson (Everett, Wash.) was 1-for-3 with a double and one RBI, and
Boyd Robertson (Richland, Wash.) added a run-scoring double to account for
WSU's runs. Every starter in the Cougar lineup recorded at least one hit.
The game started as a pitcher's duel as Rogelstad and Parrish dominating
the early innings. Rogelstad allowed only one hit through the first three
innings and retired 11 of the first 14 batters he faced. In the fifth the
Cougars gave Parrish the only two runs he would need. After consecutive
singles by Steve Curran (Bellevue, Wash.) and David Perreira (Ewa Beach,
Hawai'i), Robertson pushed across the first run of the ball game with a
double to left field. Stevenson added a sacrifice fly to center field to
score Perreira and give the Cougs a 2-0 advantage.
With a lead at his back Parrish continued to mow down the Spartan line-up,
recording five of his season-high nine strikeouts over the last four innings.
The second game of the three-game series will continue tomorrow at 1 p.m.
at Municipal Stadium. Jamaal Gaines (0-2) will get the start for
Washington State (6-2) and Steve Murphy (1-1) will get the call for San
Jose State (7-6-1).
