Five Cougars Named All-Mountain West, Lewis, Hartman, Roy Named to First Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 21, 2026) – Washington State had five All-Mountain West Conference selections, including three to the first team as voted on by the coaches, the conference office announced Thursday.

Cougar lefthander Nick Lewis was named the Conference Pitcher of the Year and to the first team while senior outfielder Max Hartman and infielders Gavin Roy were also each named to the first team. Senior first baseman Ryan Skjonsby and senior righthander Griffin Smith were both named to the second team. The five selections are the most since 2023 while the three first-team selections are the most since 2009.

Lewis, the Friday night starter, is the first Cougar pitcher in program history to win Conference Pitcher of the Year. Two-way WSU legend John Olerud was named the conference player of the year and National Player of the Year in 1988. The Pac-10 Conference did not start the pitcher of the year award until 1999.

Lewis had a breakout season for WSU, going 8-2 overall with a 3.39 ERA, 54 strikeouts and a .253 batting average against in 82.1 innings. Lewis finished the regular season leading the Mountain West in wins, ERA, innings and was fourth in batting average against while his eight wins are the most by a Coug since Joe Pistorese's eight in 2015. In nine conference starts, the redshirt-sophomore Lewis went 7-1 with a 2.83 ERA in 54 innings, pacing the league in innings and wins while posting the second-lowest ERA in MWC play. Lewis went six-plus innings in seven Mountain West starts including four of seven-plus innings and allowed just three earned runs or less in seven starts including five starts with two earned runs or less.

Hartman earns his first career all-conference accolade after a record-breaking senior regular season campaign. The outfielder leads the team with 116 total bases including 13 doubles, six home runs and 69 hits including a WSU single-season record eight triples, tied for the national lead. Hartman hit .333, drove in 42 runs, scored a team-high 56 runs, recorded 22 multiple-hit games and was 17-of-20 in stolen bases while starting all 52 games. In conference play, Hartman hit .376 with five doubles, seven triples, one home runs, 22 RBI and eight stolen bases.

Roy earns his first career all-league honor after hitting a team-best .365, fourth-best in the Mountain West, recorded 69 hits, 13 doubles, one triple, one home run and 35 RBI. The senior infielder started all 52 games, scored 43 runs, owns a team-best .468 on-base percentage, a team-best 24 multiple-hit games and enters the conference tournament with a 39-game on-base streak, the third-longest streak in WSU history. In conference play, Roy hit .380 with 35 hits, 29 runs scored, 11 doubles and 16 RBI.

Skjonsby earns his first career all-conference accolade after hitting .333 with 59 hits, 40 runs scored, eight doubles, five stolen bases, along with team-highs of eight home runs and 51 RBI. The senior first baseman started all 52 games, recorded 18 multiple-hit games including a two-homer game in the series-clinching win at UNLV in April. In conference play, Skjonsby hit .345 with four doubles along with team-highs of five homers and 27 RBI.

Smith earns his first career all-league honor after finishing the regular season second on the team with five wins, good for sixth in the conference. The senior righthander went 5-4 with 47 strikeouts in 73 innings and wins at Cal Poly, at San Jose State, Gardner-Webb, Fresno State and at Air Force. In conference play, Smith went 3-2 with a 5.09 ERA, 31 strikeouts and eight walks in 46 innings.

The Cougars finished the regular season with a 27-25 mark including a 15-9 record in conference play to earn the program's first trip to the postseason since 2010 and the two seed at the Mountain West Conference Tournament. WSU's 15 conference wins are the most since 2010, the 14 road wins are the third-most since 2000, the seven series wins are the most since 2017 and six-straight series wins to close the year is the longest series winning streak since 1995.

Washington State will face the winner of Air Force and UNLV Friday night at Sloan Park in Mesa, Arizona.
