We recently had the chance to sit down with redshirt-sophomore Jaylen Thomas
What drew you to WSU?
I was drawn by the Pac-12, it's a significant conference. Also, my coach. When I hit the portal Coach (Greg) Burns had called me, and we made a connection. So, here we are, back together again.
How has Washington been different than California?
The first thing I think of is the weather; it's way colder than California. The snow has definitely been a big adjustment. But it's really all about putting layers on, which I'm not really concerned about. I'd rather be cold than hot, so it's been cool.
How has WSU been different than San Jose State?
I feel like it's more intentional. Don't get me wrong, San Jose State is a great program, but I feel like we're doing the right things here. Everything we do has a purpose and it's all efficient.
Your sisters Korie and Aubrie played softball at San Jose State, how have they impact your college career?
They've impacted my whole life, I'm the youngest but we've always been competitive towards each other. Whether that's sports, in the house, really anything, we're always competing against each other. That develops an edge for me at least, maybe for both of them but it's boosting me and helped me because the competition is what drives me.
Did your parents play college or professional sports?
Yes, my dad played football for San Jose State and my mom played softball for them as well.
Do you have any hidden talents?
I can juggle.
What is your favorite memory of playing football?
When I went to Florida for a pop warner national championship. I got to do it twice, it was a once in a lifetime experiences two times. And the Disney World parks and everything was awesome.
What is the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
Stay hungry, anytime you get in a situation where you think you're in the right spot, you're wrong. You should always be thinking 'okay, what can I do better? What can I do to better my situation?'.
What do you like to do in your free time outside of the football?
I'm a big golfer because I like being outside and enjoy the sun. I'll fish occasionally, but other than that I'm a chill guy.
Do you prefer to golf solo or with others?
Both, I enjoy golf either way. By myself with music, or with friends and music.
What is your go to pregame meal?
Rice and chicken just to keep it simple, don't want to get too bloated before the game but also want to get in some good carbs and protein.
If you didn't play football, what sport would you play and why?
I grew up playing football and baseball, but once I got to high school I locked in on football. I left baseball in my childhood, so if I wasn't playing football, I'd be playing baseball for sure.
Who is a football player you look up to?
Troy Polamalu, that's why I've been a steelers fan since I was a kid. I watched him and the steelers and they kind of stuck with me. He's a hall of famer, one of the best to ever do it. I can always admire him and the way he played in the NFL.
