Cougars Drop Opener at San Diego State

WSU dropped a 14-4 decision Friday.

SAN DIEGO (March 13, 2026) – Washington State dropped the series-opener at San Diego State 14-4 Friday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
 
The Cougars (6-10, 0-1 MWC) received two-hit games from Trevor Smith, Max Hartman and Gavin Roy but San Diego State (10-8, 1-0 MWC) used a pair of five-run innings to take the conference opener.
 
KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
WSU used a Dustin Robinson RBI-double just inside the left field line and a Mason Pirello RBI-groundout to shortstop for a 2-0 lead. San Diego State answered with a five runs on six hits in their half of the first for a 5-2 advantage
 
Both teams traded runs in the fourth before Smith and Hartman tripled in the fifth inning. Hartman's triple off the left field wall scored Smith to make it a two-run game but Hartman was stranded after a pair of strikeouts.
 
SDSU was able to push their lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the inning after a two-out two-strike softly hit chopper snuck over the Cougar reliever and back up the middle for a two-run single. The Aztecs added five more in the seventh after a defensive miscue and four hits.
