LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Washington State women's soccer team defeated UC San Diego, 1-0 Thursday evening at Triton Soccer Stadium in San Diego, California. The Cougars celebrated WSU Head Coach
Todd Shulenberger's 200th career match at the helm of the program with a second-half goal from redshirt-senior
Jordyn Young.
Young, a transfer from California, scored her first goal of the season in the 60th minute when she picked off a passing miscue between the UCSD goalkeeper and backline and delivered a composed left-footed finish into the open goal from 18 yards out.
The Martinez, California native nearly scored in the opening moments of the match, shooting from a tough angle less than 60 seconds after the opening whistle, which grazed the top of the crossbar. The Cougars continued to pressure throughout the first half, outshooting the hosting Tritons, 10-3 in the first half. Redshirt-freshman
Kiera Mitchell headed a 4th-minute corner kick just wide of the left post, and
Audrey Shackelford drove a left-footed strike from outside the area in the 36th minute that caught the defense flat-footed.
UC San Diego's best opportunity of the match came in the 14th minute, putting a shot on target after beating WSU 'keeper
Keara Fitzgerald. Fellow redshirt-senior
Jenna Studer made a goal-line stop to keep the score level and maintain the cleansheet.
Fitzgerald, the reigning WCC Defensive Player of the Week, earned her second-consecutive shutout with four saves, in addition to Studer's team save. The Cougar defense has held opponents to just three goals this season, a 0.60 goals against average through five matches.
The Cougars complete the weekend road trip with a Sunday afternoon clash at UC Irvine, September 14 at 1 p.m. Studer scored against the Anteaters in a tie on the Palouse last season. Sunday's match will stream live on ESPN+.
