WSU Ties No. 13 Georgia, 1-1, at Home

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State women's soccer team tied the No. 13 Georgia Bulldogs, 1-1, at Lower Soccer Field Sunday afternoon in Pullman, Washington. The Cougars scored the early goal in the 12th minute from Ava Ghoreishi, holding the lead through halftime, before Georgia scored the equalizer in the 69th minute. The Cougs earned a top-25 result against a ranked opponent for the second-consecutive season and earned a result at home against a top-15 team for the first time since October 24, 2021, drawing then-No. 8 UCLA.

The Cougars took the early lead when redshirt-senior goalkeeper Keara Fitzgerald served a free kick from the center circle. The high, arching service dropped into the 6-yard box and was met by Georgia's 'keeper under pressure from WSU freshman Ava Ghoreishi. The Bulldogs' goalkeeper bobbled the ball into Ghoreishi's path as the freshman pounced on the opportunity and poked it into the net for her first career goal. Ghoreishi's goal was also the fastest of the young season, scoring in the 12th minute.

The Cougars' goal in the first half marked the 100th all-time WSU goal scored against a top-15 opponent. Wazzu tied its 34th all-time game against a ranked opponent and 49th all-time result against a top-15 side.

WSU took the lead into the locker room at halftime, marking the first time this season with the intermission advantage. Georgia equalized in the second half, scoring in the 69th minute in front of an empty net. WSU goalkeeper Keara Fitzgerald, who made four saves in the game, came off her line to close down the shooting angle. After a first stop, the Bulldogs found space to serve a ball into the 6-yard box and into goal despite the defensive effort to cover the goal line.

The Bulldogs played a physical midfield game, picking up four yellow cards for tough fouls, despite the Cougars committing 15 fouls to Georgia's seven. With one minute remaining, Fitzgerald delivered a heroic save to maintain the tie. The Bulldogs earned a dangerous free kick at the top of the 18-yard box, calling on Fitzgerald to make the diving save to her left and secure the result.

Washington State returns to the road next week for a single-game road trip to Berkeley, California. The Cougs will face California in their second nonconference meeting in program history, Thursday, Sept. 4 at 3 p.m. at Edwards Field. The game will stream on ACCNX.
