Evans Kurui 2025 Stanford

Records Fall at Stanford Invitational

| By:
SPOKANE, Wash./STANFORD, Calif. (April 4, 2025) -- Rosemary Longisa and Zenah Cheptoo each broke school records while Evans Kurui broke the 10000m meet record to highlight a busy day for Cougar Track & Field at both the Stanford Invitational and Whitworth Peace Meet, in Stanford and Spokane, respectively. A total of 17 WSU athletes set personal best times on the day.

Longisa started things off Friday evening in Stanford by breaking Jennifer Robertson's 32-year-old record in the 1500m, running 4:13.59 to finish second in her section and breaking Robertson's WSU record by more than a second, which was set in Seattle in 1993. Later than evening, Cheptoo shattered WSU's record in the 10000m, finishing fifth overall in a time of 32:23.18, breaking Vallery Korir's previous mark of 33:16.89 set in Sacramento, Calif. in 2018. Cheptoo finished fifth in her section.

In the men's 10000m, Kurui continued his remarkable freshman campaign as he captured first in the top section, crossing the line in 27:37.32, setting a meet record and finishing with the third-best time in program history. The time is also tops in the nation early in the outdoor season.

Stanford Invitational
Freshman Kai Twaddle-Dunham started the Cougs day in Stanford with an impressive discus throw of 57.09 meters to finish first. His first three attempts were decent with the best of them being a distance of 54.71 meters. His fourth throw was his best, reaching 57.09 meters, tops in the field and setting a personal best distance. Maxwell Moore also excelled in the event, finishing second overall to Twaddle-Dunham with a distance of 53.01 meters.

Nicole Bissell and Caroline Jepkorir both set personal bests in the 3000-meter Steeplechase. This was Jepkorir first time running this event in which she finished seventh in her section in a time of 10:08.23. Her best 400-meter section of the race was from 200 meters to 600 meters in which she ran an impressive 1:15.40. Jepkorir's time marked the second-fastest in program history. Bissell finished in 10:24.27, seventh in her section and the eighth-fastest time in school history.

In the Women's Javelin Throw Invite, Laura Lindquist and Baylee Wroble finished third and fourth, respectively. Lindquist finished with a distance of 46.70 meters and Wroble finished with a distance of 44.61 meters. Lindquist's best throw came on her second attempt while Wroble's was on her third attempt.

Senior Alaina Stone Boggs capped the night in Stanford by finishing second in Section 2 of the 10000m, crossing the line in 33:37.70, a personal best and the fourth-fastest time in program history. The race was Stone Boggs' 10k debut.

Whitworth Peace Meet
Nevaeh Wilson captured the women's discus in Spokane, set her winning throw of 45.38 meters on her third attempt after fouling on her second. There was no looking back after this when no one came close to her throw, with second place finishing almost two meters behind. This is Wilson's first win of the outdoor season. Lindi Kessinger also did well in the event, finishing fourth with a distance of 41.46 meters.

In the Women's Pole Vault, Chloe Metz finished on the podium with a height of 3.84 meters. This is a season-best for her. Angie Turner also set a season-best height of 3.24 meters, finishing 10th.

Isabela Alvarado and Lily Herman both put up strong performances in the Women's 800-meter race, finishing in fourth and fifth respectively.

In the Women's 1500-meter race, all six Cougars finished with personal best times. Maya Nichols was the best of them with a 13th-place finish of 4-minutes, 39.64 seconds. Jaylyn Lehner also rounded out the top-20 with a time of 4:42.35.

Sarah Kovich finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.09 seconds. Her time was a season-best which she will look to improve the rest of the season.

Alexandra Gustavel finished second in the Women's High Jump with a height of 1.68 meters. This height was good enough to be a season-best for Gustavel. Kovich also competed in the event, finishing sixth, with a season-best height of 1.63 meters.
