Nevada Rallies in Ninth to Take Game Two

PULLMAN, Wash. (April 18, 2025) – Nevada rallied with two runs in the eighth and six in the ninth inning as Washington State dropped a 10-5 contest at Bailey-Brayton Field Friday evening.

The Cougars took a 5-2 lead into the eighth inning and held a 5-4 lead with one out in the ninth but Wolfpack used four straight singles to tie the game and a bases-loaded walk to take a lead before adding four more runs.

Logan Johnstone, Will Cresswell and Ollie Obenour each collected two hits while Griffin Myers delivered a two-run double. Cougar starting pitcher Griffin Smith allowed two runs and struck out three while working into the seventh inning before UNR rallied against the bullpen in the eighth and ninth innings. Gavin Roy had the go-ahead RBI-single in the sixth and later stole base while extending his on-base streak to 26 games. WSU combined to leave 14 runners on base.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
Nevada used back-to-back solo home runs for a 2-0 lead in the first inning. WSU threatened for much of the game, stranding two runners in the first, left a runner on second in the third and two on in the fourth inning.

In the fifth, Northrop led off with a line drive single to centerfield and came around to score on Cresswell's two-out RBI-single up the middle. Obenour followed with a two-out RBI-single to right field to tie the game at two.

Nevada put runners on the corners with two outs in the sixth but Smith ended the threat with a groundout to shortstop, his fifth-straight scoreless frame. In the WSU sixth, Luke Thiele worked a leadoff walk, pinch-hitter  Myers was hit by a pitch and Northrop bunted both runners up a base before Roy lined a 2-0 pitch into centerfield for the go-ahead RBI-single and a 3-2 Cougar lead.

The Wolfpack threatened in the seventh with a one-out triple but the Cougars called upon righthander Ingmar Hutzezon from the bullpen who ended the inning with a groundout to a drawn-in shortstop and a groundout to third base, preserving the 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Myers rocketed a two-out two-run double just inside the first base bag and down the right field line to push the lead to 5-2.

Nevada used a pair of leadoff walks, a single and sacrifice fly to plate two runs and make it a one-run game in the eighth.

In the ninth, Nevada used four straight one-out singles to tie the game at five and took a 6-5 lead with a bases-loaded walk and a 7-5 lead with a fielder's choice groundout to shortstop. The Wolfpack added a two-run double to left and an RBI-single to left for a 10-5 advantage.
