Johnstone, Myers Lead Cougars Past New Mexico, 16-11

ALBUQUERQUE (April 13, 2025) – Logan Johnstone and Griffin Myers each drove in four runs as Washington State closed out its series at New Mexico with a 16-11 victory Sunday afternoon.
 
All nine starters scored a run and five Cougars collected multiple-hit games as Johnstone recorded four hits including two doubles and one homer while Myers set career-highs with three hits including two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored. Will Cresswell had a three-run double, Ricco Longo doubled, homered and scored three runs and Kyler Northrop had an RBI-triple.
 
Cougar starting pitcher Luke Meyers earned the win after going five innings with a pair of strikeouts.
 
WSU recorded nine extra-base hits and scored in the first three innings including an eight-run third inning. UNM scored in the final three innings including three in the eighth and three in the ninth before Rylan Haider entered from the bullpen to pick up the final three outs.
 
KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
Both team traded runs in the opening frame before WSU took a 3-1 lead with two in the second on a run-scoring sacrifice fly from Roy and an RBI-double to right field by Johnstone.
 
The Cougars struck for eight runs on five hits in the third inning as Myers lined a double the other way down the left field line to score runs, Northrop lined an RBI-triple the other way just inside first base bag and down the right field line before Cresswell drove an 0-1 pitch to right-centerfield for a three-run double.
 
Meyers posted scoreless second and third innings before UNM scored three in the fourth but Meyers closed his day with a scoreless fifth.
 
WSU scored twice in the fifth on solo home runs from Johnstone and Longo and added another run in the sixth on a Johnstone opposite-field RBI-single to left field for a 14-4 lead. Myers added a two-out two-run single to right field in the ninth.
