SPOKANE, Wash. — Sophomore
Grant Buckmiller put his name into the WSU record book by becoming the fastest indoor 400-meter runner in school history while sophomore
Tatum Moku improved on her school record in the pole vault to highlight Saturday's action at the Riverfront Invitational. On another triumphant day at The Podium for the Cougs, WSU student-athletes won three events and set 14 personal bests.
Â
Buckmiller's time of 46.22 seconds is 0.16 seconds faster than the previous record holder, Jeshua Anderson, which he set in 2010. In a testament to the difficulty in breaking the 400m mark, Anderson held his record for 15 years after breaking Michael Joubert's mark which had stood for 19 years. Buckmiller's time ranks 17th in NCAA Division 1 this season. Senior
Ethan Willems grabbed the second spot on the podium in the event with a time of 46.73, and
Royal Haley set a personal-best time of 47.23 to finish fourth.
Â
Moku, a junior, improved her program record by winning the Women's Pole Vault with a personal-best height of 4.43 meters/14' 6.25". Moku set the stage early by successfully clearing the height on the first attempt at both 4.23 meters and 4.33 meters. At 4.43 meters, she missed her first two attempts but cleared the bar on the third, now holding the 11th-best height in NCAA Division 1 this season.
Â
In the Women's 60-meter hurdles,
Micaela De Mello found the winner's circle for the third-straight meet with a time of 8.08 seconds. This was three-hundredths of a second faster than the seconds place finisher.
Â
The Men's 3000-meter race was filled with personal and season bests. Freshman
Evan Bruce set a personal best time of 8-minutes, 24.58 seconds to finish second.
Brandon Moore also found himself on the podium, finishing third with a season-best time of 8:26.27.
Grayson Wilcott rounded out the top five with an impressive season-best time of 8 minutes and 27 seconds.
Â
Sophomore
Seth Nelson set a personal best height in the Men's Pole Vault Invite with a height of 5.13 meters. This ranks 82nd in NCAA Division 1 and puts him seventh in program history, taking over teammate Gavin Dimmick's current spot.
Up Next:
The Cougs will have another split weekend in Seattle and Spokane next weekend at the Husky Classic and Whitworth Invitational.
