Cougars Claim Four Titles on First Day at MPSF Championships

| By:
SPOKANE, Wash. (February 21, 2025) – Grant Buckmiller, Gavin Dimick, Tatum Moku and the WSU Women's distance medley relay team all captured titles during the first day of competition at the 2025 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday at The Podium. Additionally, Cougar student-athletes accounted for 10 personal-best marks.

Following the first day at the MPSF Championships, the Cougar men are in first place with 71 points, followed by Long Beach State (65) and Portland (42. The Cougar women sit fourth with 36 points, trailing Oregon State (46.5), Long Beach State (46) and UC Davis. (36).

Buckmiller, a sophomore from Lake Stevens, Wash., crossed the line in 20.72 seconds, setting a 24-year-old meet record of 20.75 set by Washington's Ja'Warren Hooker in 2001. Buckmiller's time also set a WSU record and marks the 14th-fasted time in NCAA Division I this season. Previous record holder, junior Mason Lawyer, finished third in the race at 20.83.

Sophomore Gavin Dimick captured his first MPSF title as he set a personal-best height of 5.20m (17' 0.75"), over a foot higher than teammate Seth Nelson's second-place height of 4.85m (15' 11.0"). After passing on the first four heights, Dimick needed just four vaults to clear the next three marks, before falling short of the 5.30m height.

On the women's side, sophomore Tatum Moku joined Dimick as an MPSF pole vault champion, taking the title after clearing 4.36m (14' 3.50"). Moku's height was nearly nine inches higher that her nearest competitor as she was the only vaulter to clear 4.26m, let alone 4.36m. Teammate Chloe Metz captured fourth in the event after reaching a height of 3.96m (12' 11.75").

The night concluded with WSU's distance medley relay team, comprised of Rosemary Longisa, Zakiya Hill, Riley Pyeatt and Zenah Cheptoo, running to victory in 11:23.57, just .23 seconds ahead of Oregon State. WSU's mark is the seventh-fast in school history and the 27th-fastest time in NCAA Division I this season.

In the Women's 200m, sophomore Brooke Lyons finished second in a time of 23.77, a personal best and the second-fast time in program history. Senior Ashley Hollenbeck Willems also set a PR, crossing in 24.17, tied for the sixth-mark time in the WSU record book.

In the Men's Weight Throw, both Caden Hottman (18.79m (61' 7.75")) and Tristian Webb (18.01m (59' 1.25")) set PRs, finishing third and sixth, respectively. Junior A.J. McGloflin finished second in the Men's High Jump after clearing 2.14m (7' 0.25").

Freshman Evans Kurui was the bearer of bad luck in the 5000m race. Kurui, who led by 25-30 seconds for the majority of the race, crossed the finish line 28 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. After the race, it was determined that Kurui had run off the track on one of the curbs and was disqualified, despite the large margin of victory.
