PULLMAN, Wash. (Dec. 31, 2025) – Washington State University Head Football Coach
Kirby Moore announced Friday the first additions to his coaching staff with the hiring of offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach
Matt Miller, defensive coordinator/linebackers coach
Trent Bray, and director of football athletic performance
Malcolm Hardmon.
Â
"It's exciting to see our staff come together and with Matt, Trent and Malcolm, we have a great nucleus to build around," said Moore. "All three men are exceptional teachers, mentors and leaders who want to be here. They have proven track records of success and are committed to developing young men on and off the field."
Â
Miller arrives in Pullman having spent the past six seasons at Boise State, the first five as wide receivers coach and last year added co-offensive coordinator duties. During his six seasons in Boise, the Broncos posted a combined 51-24 record, played in four bowl games and this past season, he directed an offense that ranked 28th nationally at 424.0 yards per game in leading Boise State to its third-straight Mountain West championship. In 2024, the offense led Boise State to a final No. 8 national ranking after it reached the CFP Quarterfinal at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl. The Broncos finished the season ranked eighth in the country in total offense and fifth in scoring offense.
Â
Prior to Boise, Miller spent four years at Montana State from 2016-19, coaching wide receivers and adding offensive coordinator duties midway through the 2018 season. He began his coaching career as an offensive quality control assistant at Boise State in 2015.
Â
Miller was a wide receiver at Boise State (2011-14), where he teamed with Moore for three seasons.
Â
"
Matt Miller is an exceptional offensive football coach who has had success throughout his career," said Moore. "I can't wait for Matt to design and implement our offense to the strengths of our players. There is not a doubt in my mind that Matt will have our offense lighting up the scoreboard."
Â
Bray is very familiar with Washington State and the Pac-12, having spent 11 seasons at Oregon State from 2012-14 and 2018-25, the last two years as the Beavers head coach. He served as OSU's linebackers coach from 2018-21, then added defensive coordinator duties from 2021-23. When Bray took over the defense, the Beavers became of the top units in the Pac-12, leading the conference in red zone defense while allowing the fewest plays of 10 or more yards in 2022. During his time in Corvallis, Bray helped the Beavers to five bowl games in his 11 seasons.
Â
In between stints at OSU, Bray coached linebackers at Nebraska from 2015-17, helping the Cornhuskers to bowl games in his first two seasons.
Â
Bray played for the Beavers from 2002-05, starting 34 consecutive games during his career. He is a native of Pullman, as his father Craig served as the secondary coach on both Dennis Erickson's (1987-88) and Mike Price's (1994-99) staffs.
Â
"Trent brings a wealth of experience and success as a defensive coordinator," said Moore. "I've always been impressed with his schemes and game plans, including my experience competing against Trent in 2022. His ability to develop and motivate his players while playing an attacking style sets him apart."
Â
Hardmon is no stranger to Moore as the two have worked closely over the past three seasons at Missouri, where he served as assistant director of football athletic performance. Hardmon arrived in Columbia in 2022 and made in immediate impact on the program. The year prior to his arrival, the Tigers went 6-7 during the 2021 season. Since that time, Missouri has compiled a combined 35-17 record, with two 10-plus win seasons and four-straight bowl game appearances.
Â
In addition to his time at Missouri, Hardmon worked with the football programs at Western Kentucky and Auburn. He also spent two years as a mixed martial arts coach in Florida.
Â
"I couldn't be more excited about adding Coach Hardmon," said Moore. "Malcolm will be pivotal in the everyday development of our student-athletes. I look forward to Malcolm bringing positive energy, developing relationships, and helping our student-athletes reach their personal best."
