Cougar Soccer Comeback Win Concludes Season

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Washington State women's soccer team defeated the Pacific Tigers, 2-1, in a come-from-behind win to conclude the 2025 season. Cougar freshmen Keira Mitchell and Journey Middleborn delivered the goals for WSU, while fellow freshman Isabelle Wright delivered the assist.

The Cougars started on their heels, defending from the opening whistle. Senior goalkeeper Zora Standifer was called on in the first 30 seconds to make a save, one of six in the match. Pacific found a gap in the defense late in the fifth minute, scoring from the edge of the box, the third-fastest goal conceded by WSU this year.

Washington State re-collected itself and went on the attack as Middleborn delivered the first shot on target for the Cougs in the eighth minute. Standifer would be called on again in the 15th minute, making a full-extension dive to her lower right to keep the Tigers' lead at one.

In the 24th minute, Mitchell stepped up to a free kick at the left edge of the penalty box, following a Pacific foul. The Henderson, Nevada native struck the ball at the upper left corner, powering the shot through the Tiger goalkeeper's arms, and equalizing the match. The goal marked Mitchell's fourth of the season, as the redshirt-freshman finished second on the team in scoring.

Mitchell delivered heroics again before the first half ended, heading away a Pacific shot attempt in the 42nd minute that was bound for the back of the WSU net. The team save proved crucial, as the Cougars returned from the break to score the game-winner.

Just 90 seconds into the second half, Middleborn delivered her game-winning shot, a right-footed strike from the top-right side of the goal box. The shot skipped through traffic and into the far bottom corner, giving Middleborn her third career goal.

Middleborn's game-winner came from a laid off pass by fellow freshman Isabelle Wright. The Boise midfielder made a name for herself, delivering a team-high five assists this season. Wright became the first freshman in Coach Shulenberger's tenure to lead the Cougars in assists, and delivered the most assists by a Coug freshman since Kourtney Guetlein tallied five in 2012.

In her final college moments, Standifer was asked for one more crucial save, shutting down a point-blank shot at her near-right post in the 88th minute. The save maintained the Cougars lead and secured the victory.

The 2025 Washington State soccer season concluded with the Cougars finishing 7-7-5 and 5-4-2 in the West Coast Conference. WSU finished at or above .500 for the ninth-consecutive season in Coach Shulenberger's 11th year at the helm of the Cougar program.
