Youth Shows Spark in Hard-Fought Home Battle

PULLMAN, Wash. (November 19, 2025) – Washington State refused to back down Wednesday evening at Beasley Coliseum, showing stretches of gritty basketball in an 86-59 battle with unbeaten Oregon.

The Cougars (0-5, 0-0 WCC) put together a strong offensive second half behind 37 points as a team, led by Malia Ruud's 12 fourth-quarter points. Ruud's fourth quarter propelled her to 19 points for the game, going 8-of-17 shooting while knocking down a pair of threes.

Charlotte Abraham delivered 14 points, including a perfect 6-of-6 showing at the free-throw line. Her back-to-back steals and early triples steadied WSU in the first half and kept the Cougs within striking distance.

Mackenzie Chatfield set the tone on the perimeter with six assists, two steals, and several key defensive stops, while Malvina Haziri added six points on a pair of threes.

After a challenging opening quarter, WSU settled into its rhythm, moving the ball with purpose and finding more consistent looks inside. The Cougars shot 7-of-26 from three but generated strong second-chance efforts from Marta Alsina (six rebounds) and Tanja Valancic, helping WSU build a 26–24 edge in points in the paint.

The Cougars' best stretch came early in the third, when Ruud, Abraham, and Keandra Koorits combined to chip a 20-point margin down to 11, forcing Oregon into back-to-back timeouts as WSU's defense strung together stops and flowed into quick transition scores.

Oregon's hot perimeter shooting ultimately created separation late, though, as they went on to win 86-59.
