Cougars Come Up Just Short in 10–7 Loss at Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Washington State battled through a defensive slugfest Saturday night at Reser Stadium but came up just short in a 10–7 setback against Oregon State.

The Cougars (4–5) controlled much of the first half and took a 7–3 lead into the break after sophomore running back Kirby Vorhees punched in a 3-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter. WSU's 75-yard scoring drive was highlighted by efficient passing from senior quarterback Zevi Eckhaus and timely runs from the Cougar backfield.

Eckhaus finished 13 of 24 for 146 yards through the air while adding 24 yards on the ground. Vorhees led the WSU rushing attack with 46 yards on 10 carries. Senior receiver Joshua Meredith added four catches for 44 yards, and Tony Freeman contributed 37 yards receiving and 69 yards on punt returns, including a 47-yarder that set up good field position in the first half.

Defensively, Washington State turned in one of its strongest efforts of the season, limiting the Beavers to just 208 total yards and one third-down conversion in 12 attempts. Sophomore linebacker Anthony Palano paced the Cougars with 10 tackles, while Bryson Lamb, Malaki Ta'ase, and Caleb Francl each recorded sacks.

Despite the defensive dominance, Oregon State managed the go-ahead touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. WSU had a chance to tie the game in the final minutes, but a 32-yard field goal attempt drifted wide with just over a minute remaining.

Washington State finished with 271 total yards and held the ball for nearly 29 minutes but was hurt by penalties and two turnovers.

The Cougars will have a bye next week.
