Cougars Fall to Portland, 0-1, in Rainy Match

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Washington State women's soccer team lost to Portland, 0-1, Saturday night at Merlo Field in Portland, Oregon. Under heavy rain and strong wind gusts, the Pilots scored an early 11th minute goal and held on for the single-goal win.

In a defensive battle, the Cougars and Pilots entered the match allowing fewer than one goal per game. The single goal proved the difference for the home side, despite WSU outshooting UP 13-9.

WSU senior goalkeeper Zora Standifer matched her season high with four saves, bringing her season total to 24 saves and just 0.75 goals allowed per game.

Six field players went the full 90 minutes, including Ava Ghoreishi, Maizy Kluksdal, Maggie Mace, Keira Mitchell, Audrey Shackelford, and Alena Watts. Kluksdal delivered a pair of shots on target from the holding midfield position, testing Portland's keeper in the precipitation.

Washington State returns to the Palouse to begin November hosting Pepperdine, Saturday, Nov. 1. The Cougars will honor their seniors for Senior Day ahead of a 7 p.m. kickoff at Lower Soccer Field.
