Cougars Battle Hard but Fall to San Diego in Straight Sets

PULLMAN, Wash. – (October 16, 2025) – Washington State women's volleyball put up a spirited fight inside Bohler Gym Thursday night, but a veteran San Diego squad managed to fend off several Cougar rallies to take a 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-19, 25-18).

The Cougars (11-6, 5-2 WCC) showed grit and offensive flashes throughout the match. Taryn Vrieling led WSU with 10 kills, while Mary Healy matched her total and added a team-best 11.5 points. Italia Bernal distributed 27 assists and kept the Cougar offense balanced, while Tinons Munar Galmés anchored the defense with 15 digs.

Washington State finished with 33 kills on .160 hitting and out-dug the Toreros 39-38, showcasing their defensive hustle in front of a crowd of 940. Blažková added five kills on .400 hitting and a pair of solo blocks.

WSU came out strong in the opening frame, jumping ahead 3-0 behind kills from Healy and Lucie Blažková and a stuff block by the Czech middle. The Cougars held the lead until the Toreros found a late surge to take it 25-20.

The second set saw Washington State once again start fast, fueled by back-to-back kills from Vrieling and Healy. Camryn Lingenbrink provided a spark off the bench with five kills on just 10 swings (.500), and Blažková continued to make her presence felt at the net with three total blocks. However, San Diego's experience showed down the stretch, as the visitors edged out another close set.

In the third, WSU refused to go quietly, trading blows early and taking a 6-4 lead after consecutive kills from Healy. The Cougars' backcourt—led by Munar Galmés and Maddy Joswick—kept rallies alive with several impressive digs, while Bernal's aggressive setting kept San Diego's blockers guessing. But a late Torero run sealed the match.

NOTES
  • Blažková tallied two solo blocks in the match, pushing her to 59 career solo blocks, tied for eighth all-time at WSU.
  • Hitting at a .419 clip this season, Blažková currently sits with the third-highest single-season hitting percentage in WSU history.
  • With two service aces in the match, the 2025 team currently sits with the second-highest aces per set average in WSU history with 1.84.
