Cougars Drop Heartbreaker at ITA Northwest Regional Doubles Final

| By:
BERKELEY, Calif. (Oct. 14, 2025) – Washington State's Eva Alvarez Sande and Maxine Murphy held two match points but could not capitalize as they dropped a three-set match against California in the doubles final at the 2025 ITA Northwest Regional Tuesday at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

In a match delayed three hours by rain, the Cougar duo came out strong by capturing an early break against Cal's Mao Mushika and Greta Greco Iucchina, the No. 5 seeds. After conceding a break of their own to make it 4-4, WSU struck again, breaking the Cal duo. At 5-4, Alvarez Sande held serve when Mushika netted a forehand to give the Cougars the first set at 6-4.

The second set was all Cal as they rode an early break of serve to a 6-1 victory, forcing a deciding third set. The match went to a 10-point tiebreaker in place of the third set and again, WSU started strong. Jumping out to leads of 5-1 and 7-3, WSU appeared in completed control before Cal won five of the next six points to even the match at 8-8. WSU then held match points at 9-8 and 10-9, but each time Cal answered and won the final three points for the 4-6, 6-1, 12-10 win.

The Cougars are next in action Oct. 23-26 when they travel to Fort Worth, Texas, where a small contingent of players will participate in the TCU JAE Foundation Battle for the Boot.
