LOGAN, Utah – The Washington State Cougar soccer team (3-3-3) played to a scoreless road draw at No. 7 Utah State, Thursday afternoon in Logan, Utah. The Cougars picked up their third shutout of the season in the 0-0 tie with goalkeeper
Nadia Cooper earning her 17th career shutout.
Washington State becomes the only program this season to blank the top-10 Aggies, as Cooper made five saves in the shutout. The Cougars controlled the flow for much of the match, creating four shots on target in seven shot attempts, with possession through the midfield.
The draw marked the first road shutout by WSU against a top-10 opponent since Nov. 29, 2019, when the Cougs defeated No. 5 South Carolina in the NCAA Tournament. Wazzu last tied a top-10 team, Oct. 24, 2021, in a 1-1 draw with then-No. 8 UCLA in Pullman.
The Cougars threatened early in the match with five first-half shots, including three on frame. The best look of the opening stanza came from sophomore
Reagan Kotschau, when she drove a direct free kick up and over the Utah State wall from 22 yards out. The ball dipped down and looked like it would sneak under the crossbar before the Aggies' goalkeeper made the highlight save to keep the match level.
Returning from the break, the nationally-ranked Aggies pressed forward for the opening goal. The Cougars were content to meet the Utah State's aggression in the midfield and played a tight back line that led to several offside traps.
Utah State had a pair of quality chances in the second half, first in the 51st minute when the ball found the back of the net on an Aggies' breakaway. The Cougar backline held firm and the flag went up for offside, one of four from USU.
Later in the match, approaching 10 minutes left in the match, Utah State delivered an outswinging corner kick into the goal mouth, finding the head of an Aggie attacker. Cooper reacted quickly, stopping the quick shot from less than seven yards out.
Thursday's draw marked the conclusion of the Cougars' nonconference schedule, as WSU returns to Pullman to host San Diego, Saturday, Sept. 28 in the inaugural WCC match at Lower Soccer Field. Kickoff from Pullman is scheduled for 7 p.m. with coverage on ESPN+.
