Lundgren Breaks School Record in 200 IM at NCAA Championships

| By:
ATHENS, Ga. (March 21, 2024) – Washington State Swimming sophomore Emily Lundgren broke her own school record in the 200 IM in day two of the 2024 NCAA Championships at Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga. Thursday.

Lundgren, who also qualified in the 100 Breast and 200 Breast, swam a 1:58.67 in the morning prelims to break her own school record of 1:58.94 she set at the Pac-12 Championships a couple weeks ago. Lundgren will compete in the 100 Breast prelims Friday at 7 a.m. (PT) on ESPN+ before competing in the 200 Breast Saturday when fellow sophomore Dori Hathazi will compete in the 200 Fly.

"What a great start to the meet for the Cougs! The NCAA Championships was our focus early on in the season and now that we are here, we are delivering as Emily broke her own school record in the 200 individual medley," Head Coach Matt Leach said. "Emily did a great job fine tuning her strokes between the Pac-12 Championships and the NCAA's. She did a great job this morning and we are looking for more as we progress into the meet. GO COUGS!"

Lundgren broke three school records at last month's Pac-12 Championships in the 200 IM, 100 breast (59.45) and 200 breast (2:07.44) while the Chula Vista, Calif. native claimed two medals after finishing second in the Pac-12 in the 100 breast and third in the 200 breast.

Lundgren and fellow sophomore Dori Hathazi are back at the NCAA Championships for the second straight season. The sophomore duo is the first set of Cougar teammates to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the back-to-back seasons in program history and give WSU an NCAA Championship qualifier in the last five seasons (2020 NCAA's were cancelled) with seven swimmers qualifying over that stretch. Lundgren qualified to swim the 200 IM, 100 breast and 200 breast while Hathazi will compete in the 200 fly.

Last season, the same two swimmers became the first Cougar freshmen to qualify for the NCAA Championships in program history. Previous Cougar swimmers to qualify for the NCAA Championships multiple times were Erin Eldridge (1998-2000), Erin McCleave (2006-07), Michael Ahlin (2009-10) and Chloe Larson (2021-22).
