SAN FRANCISCO – The Washington State Cougar soccer team (6-5-6) defeated the San Francisco Dons, 1-0, Saturday night at Negoesco Stadium in San Francisco. WSU true freshman
Kendall Campbell scored 46 seconds into the match, which proved to be the game-winning goal in the Cougars' final road contest of West Coast Conference play.
Campbell scored the fastest goal of the season for the Cougs, finding herself with an open net inside the 6-yard box after senior transfer
Raniyah Burton pursued a ball on the end line. Burton who made her second career start as a Coug chased down a ball and forced the USF goalkeeper off her line. Burton's pass skipped into Campbell for her team-high fourth goal of the season. The goal gave Burton her second assist as a Coug, and sixth collegiate assist.
The Cougars looked in control throughout the remainder of the first half, putting eight shots up against the Dons, compared to four shots by USF. Wazzu entered the break with the 1-0 lead and improved to 5-1-0 when leading at halftime.
Washington State continued to control the flow of the game after the break, using possession to limit San Francisco from developing any offensive threats. In the final 20 minutes, the Dons applied more pressure, putting up seven second-half shots, but with only one attempt on target and forcing
Nadia Cooper into two total saves.
San Francisco nearly found the equalizer in the final minute, but a foul in the penalty area by the USF offense waved off a shot that found the back of the net.
Cooper earned her 32nd career win (fourth in program history) and her 20th career shutout, sixth of the season. All six Cougar wins this year have been shutouts. Fellow senior
Grayson Lynch played her 95th career game, second-most in program history and three games from tying the school record.
WSU returns to Pullman to conclude the regular season next week, welcoming Oregon State, Wednesday, Nov. 6 at Lower Soccer Field for a 7 p.m. PT kickoff. The match kicks off a busy home week of Cougar athletics including home soccer, volleyball, football, swimming, and basketball.
