SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Washington State Cougar soccer team (5-5-6) tied No. 10 Santa Clara, 1-1, Wednesday night at Stevens Stadium in California. WSU senior
Reese Tappan less than four minutes into the game before the nationally-ranked Broncos equalized in the 28th minute. The tie marked the Cougars' second results against a top-15 side this season.
Wazzu took the lead early when Tappan scored the Cougs' fastest goal of the season at the 3:31 mark, her second career goal and first from the run of play. The Newcastle, Washington native separated herself on a corner kick, heading home the service from sophomore
Reagan Kotschau back across goal. The delivery marked Kotschau's team-best sixth assist this season and put the Cougs on the front foot.
The No. 10 Broncos pressed forward, looking to play through the middle of the pitch, while WSU forced SCU to play aerial balls over the top. Tappan and the Cougar backline handled the balls over the top, limiting the high-scoring Broncos to just two shots on target in the first half.
Santa Clara found the equalizer in the 28th minute through open play in the midfield. SCU's Marissa Vasquez ran off the shoulder of a Cougar defender, receiving the pass on a well-timed run, and slotting in the goal at the far post.
The remainder of the half opened up, as the Cougars held possession through the channels, and had three more shots in the first 45 minutes. Returning from the break, WSU continued to close down SCU's midfield play, pinching the Broncos up the sidelines and over the top.
WSU had the chance to regain the lead in the 64th minute, when
Megan Santa Cruz was dragged down from behind in the penalty area. The center official pointed to the spot and
Grayson Lynch stepped up to take the penalty attempt, her first of the season. The senior sent the shot off target, and the Cougs and Broncos played out the remaining 25 minutes to a draw.
Nadia Cooper finished with two saves in the match, while senior
Grayson Lynch moved to second in WSU history with her 94th career game played. Senior transfer
Raniyah Burton made her first career start as a Coug.
WSU's rally fell short as time expired and the Cougs fell at Gonzaga for just the second time in series history. The Cougars continue a three-game road swing next Wednesday, at top-10 Santa Clara with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
