Cougars claim several wins over two days at McCluskey Memorial Open

MOSCOW, Idaho — Washington State men's and women's track and field teams combined for seven total wins over two days as the teams continued the 2023-24 indoor campaign at the two-day McCluskey Memorial Open at the Kibbie Dome.  Women's distance runner Zenah Cheptoo captured the women's 3,000-meter run title while setting a Washington State freshman record (9:32.41) on day one, and the Cougars followed up four wins on day one with another three on Saturday on from the Lauren McCluskey Track.

Day 1 (Friday) Recap
Cheptoo's winning performance was an impressive debut as the freshman moved into the lead during lap two and never looked back, eventually winning with a 17-second cushion over Idaho's Katja Pattis.

Caden Hottman led a trio of Cougars to PR in the men's weight throw, finishing in first-place with a 17.62m/ 57' 9" finish. AJ McGloflin cleared 2.08m/ 6' 9.75" to win the men's high jump with a new lifetime best, and the women's DMR team of Maya McCabe, Jasneet Nijjar, Elena Willems, and Neema Kimtai, capped the night for Washington State with a time of 11:44.23 to win their first competitive race of the indoor season.

Mason Mahacek made his Cougar debut in the heptathlon and held the overall points lead after setting PR's in the 60m dash (7.00) and shot put (12.93m/ 42' 5.25") on day one.  Mahacek finished third in the 60m hurdles on day two (8.65), before bowing out of the competition while sitting atop the overall standings.
