New Cougars impress, veterans produce strong showing at Spokane Sports Showcase

Washington State combined for four wins and several of the nation's top marks in the first meet of 2024.
SPOKANE, Wash. — Lake Stevens, Wash., product Grant Buckmiller set a program record in the men's 300-meter dash, winning the event in 32.88 (sixth-fastest in the nation this season), while fellow freshman, Eva Lowder, vaulted to the seventh-best mark in Division I at 4.22m/13' 10.00" to win the women's pole vault, and Washington State men's and women's track and field teams combined for four total wins Friday at the Spokane Showcase from The Podium.

Micaela De Mello ran the 10th-best time in the NCAA this season with a season-best 8.26, placing second overall in the final of the women's 60-meter hurdles. Lowder, a true freshman from Boise, Idaho, reached the seventh-best mark in nation in the women's pole vault at 4.22m/13' 10.00" to win her Cougar debut. Her teammate Tatum Moku took the runner-up spot in the competition with a final mark of 3.90m.
On the opposite side of the oval, AJ McGloflin reached a mark of 2.00m/6' 6.75" to finish second in his collegiate debut. Eli Lawrence later claimed the top spot in the men's triple jump, his third consecutive triple jump title at The Podium, finishing his day with a mark of 14.96m/ 49' 1.00" to wrap a strong the day for the WSU jumpers.
Caden Hottman posted the best finish of the afternoon for the Washington State throwers, placing third in the men's weight throw with a PR for a second consecutive meet at 16.96m (55' 7.75").
Having already posted the nation's top time to win the women's 400m in 54.11, Jasneet Nijjar followed-up her win by running the leadoff leg of the women's 4X400m relay team that combined for a time of 3:42.65, the seventh-best in the country and fifth-fastest all-time at WSU. The Cougars' fourth and final win of the day on the track came from the men's 4X400m team of Jared McAlvey, Grant Buckmiller, Mason Lawyer, and Ethan Willems, who finished Friday's relay in 3:11.22, the eighth-best time in program history and the fastest in Division I this season.
Washington State will have a small group of distance runners competing in Saturday's UW Indoor Preview, as well as a pair of athletes competing in the two-day Spokane Indoor Challenge which concludes Satuday back at The Podium.
