No. 7 Washington State outlasts Arizona in five-set road battle

Seventh-ranked Washington State volleyball extended its winning streak to 11-straight with a five-set road win at Arizona.

TUCSON, Ariz. — Seventh-ranked Washington State volleyball (12-1, 2-0 Pac-12) improved to 3-1 on the road and extended its now 11-match winning streak in a 3-2 (23-25, 27-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-6) win at Arizona (5-8, 0-2 Pac-12) Sunday at the McKale Center.

Pia Timmer finished Sunday's five-set win with a team-leading 17 kills while hitting .333, and Katy Ryan added two blocks and a season-high 12 kills while hitting a team-high .364.

Iman Isanovic also reached double digit kills with 10 to go along with three blocks, and Magda Jehlarova finished with a match-high seven blocks, keeping the Cougs in the match with points in huge moments all night in Washington State's fourth win of the season after falling behind early.

Arizona hit .538 (15-1-26) in the opening set, narrowly edging in front in the end with a 25-23 win despite a late push from Washington State in which the Cougars won five of the final eight points.

WSU held the Wildcats to just .091 attacking as a team in the second set as Julia Norville grabbed six of her team-high 16 digs in the set while Karly Basham added five.  The two teams traded mid-set runs in the second, forcing timeouts from each respective bench before WSU proved the stronger of the two sides at the service line down the stretch.  WSU capitalized on a service error that evened the second set at 25-25, winning back-to-back points behind the serving of Pia Timmer to win set two, 27-25.

Washington State gave back another set to Arizona in another competitive third, but Iman Isanovic led the way with five kills on only 10 swings in the fourth set while Argentina Ung dished out 11 of her 41 assists to even the match in a one-sided 25-18 fourth-set win for the Cougs.

WSU finished with 11 aces as a team on the afternoon including a season-best three aces for true freshman Emma Barbero.  Two of Barber's three aces came in the final moments of the fifth set as she served out the decisive points in the match in the form of a 5-0 run to finish off the match with a 15-6 fifth-set win.

Washington State, which came in at No. 6 in the first NCAA Division I Volleyball Committee Poll of the season as announced by the committee Sunday, is off to its best start through 13 matches under head coach Jen Greeny since beginning the 2013 campaign 13-0.

Washington State heads back on the road next weekend as it travels to play at Oregon State on Thurs., Sept. 28, before heading to Eugene to take on sixth-ranked Oregon on Sun., Oct. 1, at noon.
