KINGSTON, Jamaica – Washington State freshman goalkeeper
Liya Brooks was called up to the Jamaican Women's Senior National Team for a pair of upcoming Olympic qualifying matches against Canada, the federation announced Sept. 14. Brooks' selection marks her third call up to the senior team, after she joined the Reggae Girlz at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup this summer.
Jamaica will face Canada in a two-leg playoff series with the winner qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The first leg begins Friday, Sept. 22 at Independence Park in Kingston, Jamaica. The Reggae Girlz will make the return trip to BMO Field in Toronto, Canada, Tuesday, Sept. 26. The team with the greater aggregate goal total will clinch the second Olympic spot out of the CONCACAF region.
Hailing from Eugene, Ore., Brooks became an established member of the Jamaican youth system over the past two years. The young goalkeeper most recently competed in the U-20 CONCACAF Championships, after going undefeated with three clean sheets in the qualifying competition last fall.
Brooks traveled to Australia and New Zealand this summer for her first World Cup, and J.F.F.'s second all-time appearance in the global tournament. The Reggae Girlz made history with the federation's first victory at the World Cup, qualifying out of Group F with a win over Panama.
Canada and Jamaica earned qualification to the CONCACAF Olympic playoff after finishing second and third, respectively, at the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship.
While Brooks is away, the Cougars return to Lower Soccer Field, Friday, Sept. 22, in the Pac-12 Conference season opener. WSU hosts No. 2 Stanford at 7 p.m. with the game streamed live by Washington State.
