LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Graduate transfer
Iman Isanovic had perhaps the best match of her first weekend wearing Crimson and Gray on Sunday, tallying 15 kills while hitting .542 (15-2-24) to go along with two aces, three digs and one block as Washington State volleyball (2-1) swept Troy (0-3) to close out the 2023 Cardinal Classic at L&H Credit Union Arena.
Pia Timmer (10 kills, .474 att pct),
Katy Ryan (nine kills, .538 att pct), and Magda Jehlárová (eight kills, .583) each finished with an attack percentage over .400 as the Cougs hit .476 as a team. Setter
Argentina Ung filled the entire box score with 37 assists, two kills, four digs, two blocks and a pair of service aces. Washington State returned to form as a team with its serving game, tallying nine as a team while also finishing with a 72.5 sideout percentage as a team on the receiving end.
Ryan, a junior opposite from Rathdrum, Idaho, was named to the Cardinal Classic All-Tournament Team after finishing the opening weekend of the season with 3.33 kills/set at a .471 clip. Isanovic finished her first weekend as a Coug with 3.11 kills/set while hitting .333 and fifth-year senior
Pia Timmer led Washington State with 3.44 kills/set and a .289 attacking percentage.
Washington State trailed 7-6 early when Jehlárová's first kills of the match sparked a 6-0 WSU run. The Cougars hit .522 in the opening set, led by Isanovic who tallied five of her kills in the first as WSU raced to a one-set lead.
Isanovic and Jehlárová put away seemingly everything in the second set as the former tallied another seven kills on only 10 attacks, with the latter posting four kills on five attacks. The Cougs combined for three blocks in the second set and went on to finish the match with five total blocks collectively.
Coming off of an injury early last season,
Jasmine Martin tallied five kills and three blocks in her return to action. Martin grabbed three of her five kills in the third set to go along with her third block and
Pia Timmer led the Cougs with five thrid-set kills to finish off their second sweep of the season.
Washington State will now return to home and get set to host its 2023 home opener Friday, against Northwestern State, beginning at noon. The match will be the first of three from next weekend's Cougar Invitational with matches against Drake and Tulsa rounding out the second week of non-conference play for Washington State.
