LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Washington State volleyball (1-0) hit .424 as a team (52-10-99) and swept last season's Horizon League Champions, Wright State (0-1), winning 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-21) in the first of three matches at this weekend's Cardinal Classic from the L&H Federal Credit Union Arena. WSU has won seven of its last eight season openers and turns its attention next to a Saturday match vs. fourth-ranked Louisville (1-0) at 4 p.m PST streaming live on ESPN+.
WSU put constant pressure on the Wright State Raiders from the first serve and jumped out to double digits leads in each of the first two sets.
Katy Ryan was a perfect 7-0-7 hitting from her opposite position in the opening set as the Cougs cruised to a 25-13 win.
"I think for the most part we played pretty clean," said Head Coach
Jen Greeny. " This is a great Wright State team with a lot of success under their belt. I think in the first two sets especially, we really got on a roll. Offensively, [starting setter] Argentina (Ung) did a fantastic job with distribution and trying to get everyone involved. I think Wright State made some adjustments coming out in the third set which we thought they would. We expected them to play a tight match so it was good for us to have to make some of our own adjustments in that third set."
In another dominant second set from the Cougars, Magda Jehlárová tallied three of her five total blocks, moving just 10 shy of the all-time program record by the end of the match. WSU finished with eight blocks as a team in the season opener and held Wright State to just .116 hitting for the match.
"I think sometimes blocking is the hardest skill to get going and get into a rhythm, especially with new people," said Greeny. "I think we did a really good job blocking tonight. Of course, [starting middle blocker] Magda (Jehlárová) is a special beast of her own but [outside hitter] Pia (Timmer) and [middle blocker]
Lana Radakovic both came in and did a good job as well. Argentina was also doing a nice job blocking and so I was really happy with that."
Washington State will now turn its attention to fourth-ranked Louisville (1-0) beginning tomorrow night at 4 p.m. PST. Saturday's match vs. Louisville will be streamed live on ESPN+/ACCNX.
