PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State soccer senior
Grayson Lynch was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week, the Conference announced Monday afternoon. Lynch earned the honor after netting a brace in the Cougars' 3-2 come-from-behind win at Texas A&M, Sunday evening.
The honor is Lynch's first career weekly conference recognition, and the first by a Cougar since Sydney Pulver was named Defensive Player of the Week, Nov. 1, 2021. Lynch became the first WSU student-athlete to earn the Pac-12's offensive weekly honors since Morgan Weaver was selected Offensive Player of the Week, Nov. 5, 2019.
The fifth-year senior put the Cougs in front twice against the Aggies in College Station, Texas. Lynch stepped up to the penalty spot in the 53rd minute and buried the shot to give WSU a 2-1 lead early in the second half. After Texas A&M equalized in the 60th minute, Lynch took it upon herself to score a second go-ahead goal.
The Cougars' chance came in the 79th minute when an attempted clearance from Texas A&M fell to
Margie Detrizio. The senior one-timed the ball out of the air, square across the penalty area to Lynch. The Castle Rock, Colo., native took a touch and chipped the game-winning goal over the keeper and into the far post.
The goal gave Lynch her third career brace and first two goals of the season. Lynch's career goal tally increased to 17, just three goals shy of the school's all-time top-10 list. Lynch also notched her seventh career game-winning goal, tied for eighth in program history.
The Conference also named Kennedy Wesley from Stanford as the Pac-12 Defensive Player of Week, while Arizona State's Pauline Nelles picked up the goalkeeper weekly honor.
Washington State returns to the pitch Thursday, Aug. 24 in Portland to face the Portland Pilots at 7 p.m. PT at Merlo Field.
