Powell Inks Deal with Miami Heat for 2023 NBA Summer League
June 23, 2023 | Men's Basketball
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State men's basketball guard Justin Powell signed an agreement with the NBA's Miami Heat to play in this July's 2023 NBA Summer League, the organization announced Friday. An undrafted signee, Powell becomes the second Cougar to ink an NBA deal in the 2023 draft class, following last night's selection of WSU sophomore Mouhamed Gueye as the 39th pick in the 2023 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets.
Â
A 6-6 junior shooting guard from Prospect, Ky., Powell started all 34 games for the Cougars during the 2022-23 season, averaging 10.4 points per game and 2.8 assists per game. The sharpshooter finished second in the Pac-12 Conference in 3-point percentage with a .426 clip, and led the Cougars with 78 made 3-pointers. Against Arizona State, Jan. 28, Powell scored a season high 20 points, finishing 6-of-11 from beyond the arc.
Â
Powell also led the Cougars with 96 assists, boasting a 3.00 assist-to-turnover ratio and averaging over 2.8 assists per game. In his WSU debut, Powell dished out a career-high 12 assists, the most by a Coug in a season opener since the stat became official in the 1985-86 season. In 15 contests, Powell did not commit a single turnover, while the savvy distributor had three performances with 7+ assists and no turnovers.
Â
Powell completed his single season at Washington State with 352 points scored and guided WSU to a second-consecutive National Invitation Tournament berth for the first time in over a decade. He averaged 3.9 rebounds per game and boasted an 81.1 percentage from the free throw line. A highly touted prospect from Kentucky, Powell began his college career at Auburn, before transferring to Tennessee for his sophomore season. Powell arrived on the Palouse last summer and accumulated over 1,100 minutes played for the Cougs.
Â
The 2023 NBA Summer League begins July 3 in Sacramento. Miami will place twice in the California Classic, before continuing to Summer League games in Las Vegas, July 7-17. For a complete schedule, visit www.nba.com.
