Cougs pick up a win in the 2V8 race to conclude the Lake Wheeler Invitational

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Washington State women's rowing team picked a victory in the second varsity eight race Saturday, April 22, to cap off the weekend for the Cougars at the 2023 Lake Wheeler Invitational.

WSU's 2V8+ crew captured first place in its heat Saturday morning, posting a time of 6:56.348. Washington State finished 4.070 seconds ahead of No. 19 Iowa's 2V8+ boat en route to the victory. WSU also knocked off Miami (7:02.144), Clemson (7:06.192), Oklahoma (7:13.814), and Boston College (7:15.488) in Saturday's 2V8+ race.

Washington State took second place in the first varsity eight race to begin Saturday's regatta. The 1V8+ boat clocked in at 6:44.282, finishing second to the No. 19-ranked Hawkeyes who won the race in 6:40.910. WSU's second varsity four crew also captured a second-place finish in its third 1V4+ race of the weekend with a time of 7:58.071. WSU's 1V4+ boat placed third in its race on Saturday at the Lake Wheeler Invitational, posting a time of 7:54.530.

"The Wheeler Invitational did not disappoint," said WSU Women's Rowing Head Coach Jane LaRiviere. "It was a well-run regatta and we got three tough races in with worthy opponents. I think we learned something from each race and we're able to put it all together and have our best performance today."

The Cougars end the 2023 Lake Wheeler Invitational with seventh place overall in the 18-team regatta with a total of 45 points. WSU earned 13 points during Friday's morning heats and 11 points in Friday afternoon's races. Washington State capped off the regatta by collecting 21 points in Saturday's final heats. Duke, who co-hosted the Lake Wheeler Invitational with North Carolina, won the regatta with 88 points.

The WSU women's rowing team will now put its focus on the 2023 Pac-12 Rowing Championships. This year's Pac-12 Championship will take place May 14 at Dexter Lake, Oregon. Check back with WSUCougars.com for a full regatta preview.
